There's gay pride, and then there's Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras which lives in a category all its own. If you haven't yet been, it's a monthlong celebration in the Southern Hemisphere's coolest metropolis and culminating in an outrageous citywide celebration full parties, festivals, round-the-clock bangers, and of course the nighttime parade. You simply gotta go. It all happens during summer in Sydney, a city filled with charming neighborhoods, numerous gay beaches, outstanding Aussie and Asian cuisine and the most gorgeous harbor in the world. Hello, Europe! At last Best Gaycation Ever is crossing the Atlantic and I couldn't have chosen a more iconic first stop. Sunny Sitges is a gay traveler's paradise and almost certainly Spain's most famous LGBTQ mecca (Sorry, Ibiza). Today, we head to Playa del Muerto, the oldest queer nude beach IN THE WORLD, and a bucolic slice of Mediterranean paradise. I'll never forget the day I moved to San Francisco from the Midwest at age 22. I crossed the Oakland Bay Bridge at night with the entire city twinkling before me, but was surprised to discover there was a toll and of course had no money. The tollbooth attendant waived me through and off I was to spend my first of many chilly nights in the City by the Bay. There's nothing quite like San Francisco including its Victorian homes, impossibly steep hills, charming neighborhoods, iconoclastic residents and so much more. Most famously, San Francisco is an LGBTQ mecca and if you want to witness the full spectrum of the rainbow in its entirety, head to Dolores Park on a sunny day and plop down at the very top in a place colloquially referred to as the Fruit Shelf. With the help of my guests today, we'll talk about why the Fruit Shelf is just about the queerest way to spend an afternoon in the city and how it got that way. Plus, we'll talk about SF's best restaurants, bars, beaches, attractions and more. Don't forget to bring a sweater!
