Agricola by Tacitus is a compelling biography of Gnaeus Julius Agricola, the Roman general and governor of Britain who was also the author’s father-in-law. Blending personal tribute, military history, and political commentary, Tacitus recounts Agricola’s rise through the Roman administration and his campaigns across Britain during the first century AD.
The narrative follows Agricola as he strengthens Roman authority, reforms provincial government, advances into Caledonia, and confronts the northern tribes at the dramatic Battle of Mons Graupius. Tacitus also describes the geography, customs, and peoples of ancient Britain while presenting both Roman and native perspectives on conquest. The famous speech attributed to the Caledonian leader Calgacus offers a powerful condemnation of imperial ambition and the destruction committed in the name of peace.
Beyond its account of warfare, *Agricola* examines leadership, integrity, freedom, and the dangers of serving under a jealous ruler. Tacitus contrasts Agricola’s discipline and modesty with the tyranny of Emperor Domitian, creating a thoughtful portrait of a principled man navigating military glory and political suspicion. Concise yet richly layered, this audiobook is essential listening for anyone interested in Roman history, ancient Britain, and classical literature.
