    • “When Grief Breaks Your Brain: The Science of Loss and Healing”
      Sep 29 2025

Why does grief feel like it breaks your brain? Because science shows — in many ways, it does.

In this episode of After the Silence, Joe Alvarez explores what actually happens to the brain and body in the first weeks and months after loss. From brain fog and memory lapses to “broken heart syndrome,” cortisol surges, and rewiring of neural pathways, we’ll look at why grief is more than emotion — it’s biology.

      We’ll cover:

      • How grief triggers the brain’s survival system.

      • Why decision-making and focus collapse into brain fog.

      • The physical pain of loss — and why grief can literally hurt your heart.

      • Prolonged grief disorder and what it means if grief doesn’t ease.

      • How the brain rewires itself to adapt, and what helps healing.

If you’ve ever wondered why grief feels so heavy, confusing, and endless, this episode will give you both scientific insight and compassionate reassurance: you are not broken. You are human, and your brain is learning to carry love in a new way.

    • 🎙️ Episode 10 – Facing Grief: Healing, Living, and Moving Forward After Loss
      Sep 22 2025

Grief doesn’t go away when we ignore it. In fact, the more we push it down, the harder it comes back. In this episode of After the Silence, I talk openly about what it means to face grief head-on, the small steps that begin the healing process, and why learning to live again isn’t betrayal — it’s survival.

I share my own journey: the days I couldn’t get out of bed, when even cleaning the house felt impossible, and how I slowly began to rebuild through simple choices — walking daily, talking to friends, and eventually starting this podcast.

      We’ll explore:

      • Why avoiding grief only prolongs the pain.

      • The reality that healing isn’t linear.

      • Small daily habits that create momentum toward life again.

      • Why our loved ones would want us to carry on, not just for ourselves but for our family and friends.

      • How opening yourself to friendship, community, and even love after loss doesn’t replace the past — it builds on it.

This is not about moving on. It’s about moving forward — carrying your loved one with you while choosing to live fully in the present.

If you’re stuck in grief or struggling to take the next step, this episode is for you.

    • “Emptying the Closet After Loss: Memories, Keepsakes, and Letting Go”
      Sep 15 2025

What happens the day you finally face their closet? The dresser, the bathroom counter, the clothes that still hold their scent — and the keepsakes you didn’t even know existed?

For me, it took three years before I could begin. I sat in Christie’s closet in silence, surrounded by her things — smelling her perfume, holding her clothes, finding old letters, cards, and pictures she had saved since high school. I even discovered notes I wrote to her, Mother’s Day cards, and love letters I had forgotten about.

In this episode of After the Silence, I share the deeply emotional experience of emptying a spouse’s closet after loss — the grief, the guilt, the unexpected discoveries, and the choices: save, donate, share with family, or preserve as a legacy. I also talk about digitizing photos and old VHS tapes, and how reliving our youth together gave me both tears and gratitude.

This episode is about more than letting go. It’s about honoring a life, keeping memories alive, and creating a legacy for future generations.
