  • "Did God Really Say?"
    Oct 29 2026

In this episode of the Accidental Bible Scholar Podcast, Jeff Ward and Randy Spear open their Genesis Chapter 3 series by examining how the serpent’s temptation of Eve begins the tragic shift from a God-centered life to a self-centered life. They explore the serpent’s question—“Did God really say?”—as the first attack on the identity, security, and happiness God designed humans to receive from Him alone. They contrast the false post-fall identities of “sinner” or “mere servant” with the believer’s true identity as righteous through Christ, a child of God whose security rests in the Father’s willing and able presence, and whose joy is found only in knowing Christ. The conversation also covers the danger of engaging misquotes of God’s word, the difference between wise personal fences and legalistic commands, modern ways believers still mischaracterize God, and the call to renew the mind so that everything else falls into its proper place under the simplicity of Christ.

  • A Bride for the Son, Starting in Eden
    Oct 22 2026

Randy's pick up Genesis 2 where the last episode left off, moving from the creation of mankind to the making of Eve and the foundation of marriage. God declares it is not good for the man to be alone and forms a helper who corresponds to him. Randy argues that the Hebrew word usually translated “helper,” not the NET’s softer “companion,” is the richer reading, since the same word is used of God himself as Israel’s help and shield. Eve is formed from Adam’s side, brought to him in what they call the first wedding, and received with “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” From there they trace the one-flesh union through leave-and-cleave, sex as the covenant-sealing act of marriage, and Jesus’ words in Matthew 19 and Mark 10 that what God has joined no one should separate. They also set Eden’s wedding inside the larger story of a Father preparing a bride for his Son, and close by saying the gospel can restore what the enemy attacks when marriage and the family start to crumble

  • Two Trees in the Middle
    Oct 15 2026

God stops speaking things into existence and FORMS the man from the soil, then breathes life into his nostrils.

God planted the orchard, including the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and put it in the middle, next to the tree of life. The tree of life is a picture of partaking of Christ. Genesis 3:22–24 will later bar the way so they cannot live forever in unredeemed sin. Randy’s answer to “why put the tree there at all” is that love requires a choice. No choice, no love, only robots. The same pattern shows up in “take up your cross daily.” Without that tree, God would never be known as Savior, Redeemer, or Emmanuel. A redeemed man is in Christ, beyond Adam before he sinned: filled with the fullness of deity (Colossians 2:9–10; not ourselves deity), one with Christ (1 Corinthians 6:17), seated above the angels (Ephesians 2).

Adam had work before the fall: care for and maintain the garden. Work is not the curse. Thorns are. The command is one tree, with no briefing about an enemy, because the obedience was meant to be love. “You may freely eat” is what the serpent will leave out. After the fall we carry an orphan spirit: fear of God’s presence, hoarding, and treating someone else’s gain as our loss, then painting that stinginess back onto God. Isaiah 55 says he is not in our league. First Corinthians 2:12 says the Spirit was given so we would know what has been freely given, not to thump us.

  • Man is Made In His Image, So That We May Rule
    Oct 8 2026

Jeff Ward and Randy Spear open the creation of man in Genesis 1:24–2:4. Animals are made according to their kinds. Man is not. “Let us make humankind in our image…so that they may rule.” Psalm 115:16 and Psalm 8 put the earth under human authority. Because God spoke creation into being, our words also carry power, for life or for condemnation. People are missing from the dominion list. Leadership is required. Domination, manipulation, and control are not, and he calls them witchcraft. Genesis 1:28 adds fruitful, multiply, fill, and subdue. Increase is expected, not optional. Seed and fruit were food before the fall. Roots, leaves, and meat come in Genesis 9, after the flood. Creation is finished on day six and called very good. Day seven is rest. They pause before Genesis 2:7.

  • He Made the Stars Also
    Oct 1 2026

Jeff Ward and Randy Spear pick up Genesis after day 1. The episode concludes with a powerful statement: design implies a designer. Humans, being made (designed) in the image of God (designer), have immense purpose and value.

  • Genesis: The Foundation
    Sep 24 2026

Jeff Ward and Randy Spear open the book of Genesis after wrapping up Ephesians.

    They walk through:

    • Genesis is the foundation of the our entire worldview.
    • Jesus in every chapter of Genesis
    • Why the creation account is one of the main places science, culture, and Scripture collide: How did we get here? Why are we here? Are we accountable? Is there absolute truth?
    • Arrogance on both sides — science treated as an unchallengeable religion, and religion that won’t let anyone ask hard questions
    • Two guardrails: don’t twist the Bible to fit science, and don’t make the Bible say what it doesn’t say
    • Why they reject “God used evolution” as a reconciliation: they argue it violates the text
    • A playground-fence illustration: boundaries create freedom. Their four fences for exploring Genesis 1:
      • John 1:1–3 — all things created by the Word
      • Hebrews 1:2–3 — all things created through the Son, who holds all things together
      • Colossians 1:16–17 — all things created in, through, and for Him
      • Romans 1:20 — creation leaves everyone without excuse

    • • The “where do babies come from?” analogy: Genesis 1 is true and complete, but it leaves holes for us to explore.

  • Stop Calling Yourself a Sinner
    Sep 17 2026

Randy wanted to discuss Romans 6 because he hears Christians call themselves sinners and treat ongoing sin as inevitable. He argues that it sounds humble but it is actually disguised unbelief. There is no overlap between “righteous” and “sinner.” In Adam, people were constituted sinners; in Christ, they are constituted righteous. The gospel does not merely forgive; it breaks sin’s dominion.

Randy isn’t teaching sinless perfection. He is teaching freedom, excellence, and a real progression toward holiness as believers behold Christ.

    Romans 6

    1 John 2:1; 3:6; 3:9; 5:18

    Hebrews 10:26–27

    1 Peter 4:1

    Romans 4:8

    5:17–21

  • Spiritual Warfare, Part 7: Belt of Truth and Breastplate of Righteousness
    Sep 10 2026

Podcast Summary: Accidental Bible Scholar, Episode 41 (Spiritual Warfare, Part 7)

In the 2nd half of last weeks episode, Jeff Ward and Randy Spear continue their Ephesians 6 series by focusing on verses 13–14, discussing “taking up the full armor of God” and standing, by fastening the belt of truth and putting on the breastplate of righteousness.

The belt of truth holds everything together. It exposes the enemy’s primary schemes: lies, accusation, shame, guilt and condemnation.

The breastplate of righteousness is not our performance. It is Christ’s own righteousness given to us (the great exchange of 2 Corinthians 5:21). Acting right is the fruit of already being righteous, not the way we become righteous. The enemy’s strategy here is accusation. Romans 8 declares there is now no condemnation and that God Himself will not bring a charge against His elect. Zechariah 3 pictures the high priest Joshua standing in filthy garments while Satan accuses him; God rebukes Satan, removes the filthy clothes, and clothes him in a white robe.

Colossians 2:14–15 shows the legal “certificate of indebtedness” that once gave Satan a charge against us was nailed to the cross and destroyed. The accusations that were once true are now legally false. “Show me where it’s written” Randy says often!

The result is sonship, bold access to the throne, and freedom.
