  • The Dolly Parton Hair Corn Maze
    Oct 31 2026
Johnny Mac shares five good news stories: Victoria, Australia added three national parks—Mount Buungar, the Pyrenees, and Wombat-Lerddergh—protecting over 250 square miles of forest and mountain habitat, including old-growth trees needed by endangered greater gliders, after advocacy dating to 2010. A small marble study by Trevi Fountain sculptor Pietro Bracci, made around 1736 for Pope Clement XII and long missing, resurfaced after decades in an English garden and was identified at auction. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has distributed 300+ million books since 1995, and 20 farms in the US and Canada created Dolly-themed corn mazes to raise money, featuring a pre-recorded message from Parton. In England, a Waterfowl Sanctuary worker freed a young swan from a fishing hook in minutes, a clip viewed 12.7 million times. Researchers formally described a Sri Lankan spiny mouse, Mus dambara, after learning burnt coconut bait works where peanut butter failed; only two specimens are known.

  • Detection Dog vs Sea Vomit
    Oct 29 2026
Johnny Mac shares five good news stories: Tanzania’s government officially designated a 14-kilometer-long, 200-meter-wide wildlife corridor in April 2025 after the Southern Tanzania Elephant Program mapped a route and compensated 368 landowners; cameras recorded at least 1,440 mammals, including 529 elephants, and Reforest Africa planted 100,000 native trees with 50,000 more planned. In southern Norway, melting glaciers studied by the Secrets of the Ice project have yielded 73 archeological sites and over 5,000 artifacts, including intact arrowheads and shafts up to 3,600 years old and an arrowhead possibly 6,000 years old. In Scotland, marine biologist Dr. Sim uses detection dog Druski to locate invasive “sea vomit” (Didemnum vexillum) and is training for other targets. A Queens-born truck driver built a massive balsa-and-foam scale model of New York City over 20 years, leading to a Museum of the City of New York exhibit. In Busan, South Korea, an 11.5-foot gray shark became a popular attraction after getting trapped in an artificial canal despite rescue attempts.
