Description
West Side Story began on the Broadway stage and was immediately recognized as one of the most creative musical productions of the 20th century. Its success as a motion picture was equally spectacular.
A classical story with a modern setting, it still stands as one of the major contributions of the American theater. West Side Story is a musical adapted from Shakespeare's play and was first performed in 1957. Both are stories of unrequited love that end tragically, but there are many elements that make them very different.
West Side Story, a tragic love story of Tony and Maria, touches all in many ways. Set in New York City, it introduces two groups, The Jets: an American gang and The Sharks: a Puerto Rican gang. Both gangs attend a community dance in which they plan a fight. Things take an interesting twist when Tony, the former leader of the Jets, falls for Maria, Bernardo's sister. Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks, doesn't want his sister involved with his rival.
This is an urban equivalent of Romeo and Juliet. The stories are very similar, but West Side Story has an irresistible urban appeal, an appeal that has been capturing audiences and listeners for many decades. If you're in the mood for a timeless love story, listen to West Side Story.
