"No one survives her cleansing.” When the town sleeps, the car wash awakens. Water crashes against steel, brushes grind in rhythm, and thick steam rolls across the floor, smothering everything in silence. To most, it is routine—a place to rinse away dirt and grime. To Marla Haines, it is her altar.
She knows the tunnels beneath the wash, the broken cameras, and the blind spots no one has ever noticed. She slips through the hidden hatch when the doors close and the cycle begins. The pounding spray hides every sound, the fog blinds every lens, and the drains carry away what remains.
Cars emerge spotless. Their drivers never do.
Marla calls it cleansing, a ritual to strip away the filth of those she deems unworthy. To everyone else, it looks like people simply vanish. But the truth is soaked into the concrete and whispered through the pipes, a secret the town refuses to face.
