    Description

Delia Hopkins has led a charmed life. Raised in rural New Hampshire by her widowed father, Andrew, she now has a young daughter, a handsome fiancé, and her own search-and-rescue bloodhound, which she uses to find missing persons. But as Delia plans her wedding, she is plagued by flashbacks of a life she can't recall. And then a policeman knocks on her door, revealing a secret that changes the world as she knows it.

What happens when you learn you are not who you thought you were? When the people you've loved and trusted suddenly change before your eyes? When getting your deepest wish means giving up what you've always taken for granted? Vanishing Acts explores how life as we know it might not turn out the way we imagined; how doing the right thing could mean doing the wrong thing; and how the memory we thought had vanished could return as a threat.

    good story-terrible narrators

i struggled to understand the story at its beginning ....it didn't look like i was able to pick up on who was who. but the narrators, especially Delia's character... absolutely horrible. stretching words and pronounciations...like she's constantly high... I struggled with wanting to quit listening.

Really wanted to like it but......

I really wanted to like this book but I just did not. I liked the idea of different narrators, but the woman was so off-putting that I hated the main character. I never could connect with her. The other readers were not as bad, but there was a lot of background noises that were very distracting. As for the story line, I get the feeling that the author is trying to show you how much research she did for the book but it just doesn’t fit. There are so many distracting side stories and a bunch of facts that are not relevant to the storyline. The main character is not relatable at all.
Very disappointed and will not be listening to any others by this author or the reader for main character.

    One narrator put me off

The story was good, and I enjoyed it. However I was unable to finish as one of the narrators drove me nuts. Constantly sucking up their split, licking their lips, not sure what. Cant they edit that stuff out?

Loved the story, did not love the narrators

I almost stopped listening to this book because of the narrators. The voices who read for two of the main characters were.hard to listen to, but the story was great so I'm glad I stuck with it.

Two things that trouble me about this book.

I don't write many reviews, but I really had to say something here. It is really irresponsible of you! You give a recipe to make meth. What are you thinking?!! It wouldn't hurt your story line to cut it out.

The second is just a pet peeve. I always assumed that you had professionals doing your readings. If you don't know the words or how they are properly pronounced - look it up! Saguaro is pronounced suh-wahr-oh (g makes an "h" sound) and I'm assuming your "Cutcena doll" is a Kachina Doll. Which is pronounced Kuh-chee-nuh. It was like nails on a chalkboard.

    Disappointing

I had trouble finishing this book and must say I was disappointed. Other Jodi Picoult books, I've enjoyed. This one seemed to drag on and on and was implausible in places. It could have been an interesting story, but somehow became very boring. The narration was too slow and pretty average, across the board. Sorry...this one didn't do it for me

Mysterious & terrifying until the very end

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved the father. He lied, cheated & stole for what was best for his daughter, the mark of a true parent in my opinion. He was willing to go to any length to ensure that his daughter was safe from her mother and her boyfriend.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I must say, this book did cause me to shed a few tears, mainly because for me it hits very close to home. In my own childhood, my mother was an alcoholic & drug addict. I can recall coming home from school not being able to wake her, not knowing if she was just drunk or if I should call 911. My own mother would take us to her dealers houses in the middle of the night, not concerned with if we had school the following day or if she was putting us in harms way. In this sense, I identify with this book.

The repressed memories are a very interesting subject that I look forward to learning more about, but also in a way, it is terrifying to think you could learn something that you may not want to know.

To this day, my mother is a drug addict and alcoholic and even though I have forgiven her, I have no desire to forge a relationship with her. It's a strange feeling to know that you should have feelings for someone as special as your mother who should have walked to the edges of the earth for you, and yet feel the same as if you were passing a stranger on the street of a busy street.

The ending of this book really threw me for a loop. During the last 5 minutes, you are sure you see how this is playing out and at the very end you find out exactly why the father took his little girl away from her mother.

Sometimes it's vital to take heed to those gut feelings.

    Very good book

I didn't feel it was important that we had to know everything about making meth. Anyone who reads this book wouldn't be interested in the detailed chemestry. I thought that was such a waste of words. But loved the story.

    Not as good as most

Jodi picoult is one of my favorite authors. This book was not a favorite. Didn't care about characters as much. Not sure what the point of her dad in jail story line was for.

    Not my favorite

There are some major plot holes, and some of the writing is cringeworthy... but the readers? Oy. ‘Andrew’ has something in his mouth, and all I hear is whatever it is, hitting his teeth constantly. ‘Delia’ is so whiney. The readers were hard to listen to, which made a weak story even worse.
