Description
In a world of magical power, merciless evil, and eternal darkness, the only light worth fighting for is the light you can never let die . . .
In Underland, hope has nearly been extinguished. There is no sky, only endless stone above. All things living and undead exist under the dominion of the Dark Lords, whose power is all but unlimited and whose evil is all but eternal.
Sorcerer Valdemar Verney is not one of them. The last of his line, Valdemar has devoted himself to locating his grandfather’s realm, a legendary place called Earth, where there is air and vibrant life, and where a sun shines in a blue sky. His latest attempt to uncover the way to Earth is thwarted, however, when the cunning Dark Lord Och captures him—not to imprison him, but to nurture Valdemar’s untrained yet formidable talents for his own ends.
As Valdemar learns more than he ever dreamed possible, Och’s loyal and lethal swordmistress, Lady Reynard, is on her own quest for knowledge about Valdemar’s true heritage and brutal past, which he has thus far kept hidden—even from himself. But the more the sorcerer and swordswoman discover, the closer they come to unearthing an awesome truth that will either usher the world into a new era of light or plunge it into the darkest terror . . .
The first volume of the hit dark-fantasy series—with more than 800,000 views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Best in class of the tired "reincarnation" trope.
Wow.
This book has all of the best bits of modern fantasy, with almost none of the drawbacks.
MC starts off insignificant? Gets stronger, but in ways that make sense? Check.
Lovable characters you hope become important in their own right? Check.
Villans as strong as Jesus that the MC wouldn't dream of confronting? Check
Everyone appears intelligent and doesn't seem to exist solely as a lazily written FOIL? Check.
Expansive DnD/Overlord/Vaniquer-esque world? Check
This story does everything it attempts WELL. Dare I say, excellently.
It's not the best, and sometimes it trapezed the knife's edge of "telling me more than it shows." or making it just a little bit too easy for the MC.
But overall? It's some of the best-in-class in this genre.
At this point, I have thousands of books in my library. I return 3 out of 4 these days, especially in the wasteland garbage-heap of a genre that is "accessible/litrpg/Millenial fantasy."
But this book? I'm keeping it. Bravo Void Herald. Another excellent story.
Take my money.

Well written, engaging and entertaining
Found this after finishing (and completely LOVING) the 'perfect run' series written by the same author as this series. Although this books general story type isnt as appealing to me as that one was, it still had all the same traits and aspects that make a good story IMO. Void Herold seems to have a knack for creating solid, likable, complex characters and writing good dialog to go along with them. The plot is very interesting and puts a unique spin on a very common genre. What i like the most about this author so far from what I've seen of him is he has a special way of creating a serious plot and writing all the ups and downs that go along with it in a humorous kind of way without detracting from the severity of the overall situation. He doesnt surpass that fine line from humorous to silly or stupid but is able to keep the book from getting too dark and keeps things lighthearted. Glad i got this, you should too

Excellent Lovecraftian story with immense world building
I loved this story, although ended in media res, so I can’t wait for Underland 2 to come out in December and see the story brought to its conclusion!! It’s killing me not knowing whether Lord Och is fully evil or actually kind of good. (Or at least pro-humans)

A Great Dark Fantasy
I was under the impression this was LitRPG based series based on the suggest for the book, to me, it is not… However it was a fun read/listen either way.
I was happy to discover that the MC’s secret don’t just stop at what could have been the high point in the book, its has a somewhat slow start but it’s didn’t abruptly end leaving you hanging but left just enough for an appropriate ending and left me wanting more !
I would suggest the series and will happily be picking up book 2.
Really like the narrator Tim Campbell

Couldn't finish it
Honestly, I struggled with this book I can't tell you exactly what was wrong but my interest went from Intrigue to feeling like it was a chord even listening to a chapter I ended up giving up with 2 hours left maybe one of these days I'll come back to it but won't be for a while.

Dark Story and Unpleasant Story
This story was very disturbing and unpleasant to listen to. The main character is one of the least bad characters in a world that has embraced evil ways to survive.
The main character is "only" mildly tortured a few times in a the book. There is quite a bit of distance put between the listener and the main character. The main character summons and binds other worldly beings for his own purposes.
Unless your into hearing detailed descriptions of a world that is basically a horror story given form, I'd recommend passing on this book.
The narrator did a fine job reading the story.

Very excited to hear the rest of the series
Strange that no one mentioned that the lore seems heavily inspired by Bloodborne. Story reads like an occult detective, but action scenes are done very well. Narration is perfect. Give this story a shot. I also greatly enjoyed Perfect Run by the same author, although they aren't of the same genre.

drags on and on... characters are flat
without the solid narration, I would return. this is a solid setting between d.p.prior's horror setting and fantasy. writing is solid. it's like watching a beautiful movie with great production, middling direction, and terrible actors. will not return but will not continue series.

very gewd
faithful extension of lovecrafts work done well. forshadowing is eventually tied into a whole story which makes sense.
