In True Devotion to Mary, Saint Louis de Montfort proposes a particular form of devotion that involves a total donation or consecration of oneself to Jesus through the hands of our Blessed Mother. The saint demonstrates that devotion to Mary is not an end but a means to better consecrate oneself to the service of Jesus Christ.
Nevertheless, he asserts that it is a necessary means to this end and even the safest means to achieve this goal.
St. Louis outlines the characteristics of what he calls “true” or authentic devotion to Mary in contrast to false devotions. Furthermore, he explains that there can be various forms of “true” devotion to the Blessed Virgin. However, based on his experience and readings, St. Louis asserts to have found a form of devotion to Mary that he considers the most effective in achieving our fundamental goal: union with Christ.
