Description

Private Detective Cormoran Strike is visiting his family in Cornwall when he is approached by a woman asking for help finding her mother, Margot Bamborough - who went missing in mysterious circumstances in 1974. Strike has never tackled a cold case before, let alone one 40 years old. But despite the slim chance of success, he is intrigued and takes it on; adding to the long list of cases that he and his partner in the agency, Robin Ellacott, are currently working on.

Robin herself is juggling a messy divorce and unwanted male attention, as well as battling her own feelings about Strike. As Strike and Robin investigate Margot's disappearance, they come up against a fiendishly complex case with leads that include tarot cards, a psychopathic serial killer and witnesses who cannot all be trusted. And they learn that even cases decades old can prove to be deadly....

A breathtaking, labyrinthine epic, Troubled Blood is the fifth Strike and Robin novel and the most gripping and satisfying yet.

Another deep and light study of humanity

I loved this book. I got immersed, again, into the many facets of the characters, threads are woven naturally. Life and death, love and hate, friendship, ridicule... The crimes reveal the everchanging hues of humanity, fragile, heroic, pathetic, deranged. Another handbook on human relations from which you emerge a better person. Well done. Like the four other novels, I first got the audiobook, read by Robert Glenister, and I really love the way he renders the voices. Robin and Strike are vivid, alive in their own right.

Another great Strike novel

Great narrator, great plot. One thing that keeps bugging me is that names of reappearing secondary characters get changed from a book to a book. Ilsa Herbert became Isla Herbert in this one, Chiara Porter from the first book was Chiara Parker in the next.

There is nothing better than good story telling.

I loved it and it was never boring in spite of the length. Actually, I was surprised when I realized just now how many listening hours this book provides. It was a pleasure to enjoy it. Hopefully, there will be a next one in the series soon. The people come to life and there are stories within stories. And thankfully it was not so gruesome I had to skip forward. I think I'll listen to it again very soon to fully appreciate the book and the narrator.

excellent mystery that focuses on the characters

at nearly 32 hours, this is the longest strike/ Robin book yet, and every bit satisfying as the previous. I love how the narratives weave in and out of each other seamlessly, as the novel is at once a classic mystery and a study in workplace dynamics. Galbraith is at her fluent best with original idioms and nerve wracking scenes. The brutality of the tale is juxtaposed with the human cost of the sufferers and for this alone, Troubled Blood will remain special. within the series, this equals The Cuckoo's Calling as the best mystery solves. Career of Evil remains unchallenged as the one where the characters are most in danger. I look forward to the next chapter in these fantastic novels.

Dissapointing

I have read (listened to) every book in the series to date. I have watch all the episodes that have been put to film. I really expected to enjoy this book too. But I find myself listening now, only in the hope that it improves. I am up to chapter 39, a little over halfway thru the book. I find myself thinking about giving listening to the rest up every time I listen. The main characters are miserable. Their behaviour is for the most part, disappointing, depressing and often, at critical plot points, not credible. The entire novel (so far) is largely depressing. There are whole chapters that were probably interesting for the author to write but were to me, fodder that added little if anything, to the plot, to the nuance of the storyline's events or to the characters development. The events of the novel move forward at a glacial pace with frequent interruption by sad, horrible, depressing, largely irrelevant (in that they don't add to the character development nor to the main plot) personal events of the main characters. No doubt lots of folk will disagree.

The brilliance of two Roberts

I think that Robert Galbraith (aka J.K.Rowling) and Robert Glenister (quite sure that's his real name) together work some sort of weird magic that makes whatever comes out of this collaboration pure brilliance. As much as I love the books, I haven't even thought of purchasing anything other than the audiobook because Glenister's narration is so engrossing that I'd never willingly deprive myself of it. The story was great, I had no idea what was going on till the very end, which is something I always enjoy, but it all made perfect sense. Love the character development and how real they feel, even when (or maybe especially) when they are behaving like total idiots. I'm quite curious about the character that appears behind the scenes at the end of the book - wonder if they are going to play a major part in the next one. The only question that remains is Ilsa's sudden name change. Has it been mispronounced once at the beginning and they just decided to go with it instead of changing the earlier recording? Was it intentional to see how many people actually pay attention? Did Ilsa and Nick go under witness protection so she had to change her name? I'm at a loss, to be honest. Of course, there is no sense in re-recording a whole book for the sake of this but hope that next time she's gonna go back to her usual name.

Outstanding

I grabbed every available audio moment to listen to this book. Despite its length, it never dragged, the twists, turns and dynamic between Strike and Robyn making me want to unravel the story, but not wanting the book to end. Loved it. Superb narration as well

Loved it

Another great Strike book. Loved the main story, but I also loved the side plots like the completion of Matthew's story and, of course, the romance between Strike and Robin (which doesn't mean I never wanted to hit them both round the head with exasperation). Looking forward to the next instalment!
