Shen’s losing me

This book was ok. Not terrible by any means but not great either. I’m a HUGE fan of Shen! I’ve gotten so many girls hooked on Sinners of Saint- Boston Belles as well as her earlier standalones. Her last good book was The Rake. All the books that followed (Bad Cruz, Ruthless Rivals, Beautiful Graves and this one) have been just ok. She seems to have gone on a different path. Her MO was always bringing alphas to their knees with strong heroines! I miss the Sparrow, BB’s, Emilia… type heroines! And bring back the alphahole type alphas!!!! And please, enough with the socio political pushes!! I don’t want to be lectured for eating meat and driving a gas car. Focus on angst and romance- I get enough propaganda in life. I never thought I’d say this but this might be my last Shen book unless she starts delivering again, minus the lectures. Sad listener 😕

This was the first time I’ve listen to this narrator and she did so good! Will definitely listen to this narrator again! She played both roles so well

Fan Favorite! There's a reason he does so well! He brings the pages to life and you can watch this like a movie in your head when he reads. This character was no different!

THINGS I DIDN'T LOVE
Just a personal preference, but I didn't like that he was having sex with other people in front of her. That being said I completely think it fit the story and liked that the author walked a nonpopular line in a romance for it.

THINGS I LOVED
I sound a bit muddled by what I loved because its kind of what I didn't like. I loved that this book didn't walk the line of a true HEA in the beginning. I love the realistic aspect of we don't know right away. He didn't know right away his allurement to her. I liked how she stood up for herself and didn't let him lead her down a path she was unsure of at the time. She found her way on her terms.

STEAM TO PLOT
The steamy parts in this were🥵. The plot was really good. To me, the plot was really well written. He tried to stay professional, but his connection to her won out in the end.

Ouch

If you like to hurt, this is the book for you. I had to stop listening, the betrayal and constant rejection in the form of humiliation and infidelity was just too much and it kept escalating to the point I was so upset on behalf of the main female that I had to stop.

This wasn’t terrible. There were just things that didn’t work for me. Ransom takes grumpy to an unlikable level. I felt sorry for Haley most of the book. There are two scenes where Haley walks in to see Ransom having sex with other women. And that was just off putting. I didn’t really believe in the love story. For some reason I just didn’t feel the connection. The story is well written and entertaining.

Audio lovers: 5 🌟. Narration was spot. Freaking on!! Samantha Brentmoor and Sebastian York are the narrators and were amazing.

Let's start off and say, Ransom is an a$$hole! I laugh as I type this because I was thinking, "Oh my gosh. What a jerk," multiple times within the first 40% of the book. His antics and how he tried to get her to "reform" ....damn! But oh, you can't help but love the a$$holes that LJ writes us. Hahaha. He, of course, has the best sweet side.
Hallie, I love her!! Love her. She.... geez, what do I say. What she faces is truly heartbreaking. I found myself tearing up several times throughout this book. This girl is resilient! I think she is in my top 10 female characters . I know this post is rather vague, but I really do not want to give away too much. You need to read or listen and get ready for one hell of a great book.
Check your triggers. Both the main characters have heavy up bringings, they valance one another, and Hallie's heart is so generous and humble and is exactly what Ransom needs to humanize him.

As stated above- Sebastian York and Samantha Brentmoor were fan-freaking-tastic. They were perfect at bringing Hallie and Ransom to life.

Stick with it

When I started this book I didn’t love the characters but the more I listened the more I got into it and started to enjoy it. So if you’re on the fence, give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

ugly cry alert ⚠️

once again LJ Shen has done a fabulous job of making me feel every ounce of heartbreak she puts her characters through. This author does amazing character development, and within a few pages you are hooked. I made the mistake of listening to this book while I was at work and had to have a bad "allergy" day to explain my red eyes and runny nose. It all works out as it should, but man do you feel every bump in their road. This book makes thank you/no thank you a thing!

Stick with it?

This book was a bit hard to listen to at first. It wasn’t until about half way or more through that it got better and turned out okay at the end.

L.J. Shen, for the win, again!

I love all of LJ shen's books. This is no exception. It's a very sweet love tale with some interesting characters and a pretty strong background story. I always enjoy a slow burn. This one kept you waiting, with baited breath, for these two characters to fall into each other. The performances are spectacular, as always. Who wouldn't let Sebastian York read the phone book or encyclopedia to them? I've enjoyed watching Shen develop and mature as a writer. This is another really great read from her. I highly recommend it..
