A year has passed since the Piths captured the Gander garrison at Gasterny. A year in which an unexpected and unwanted truce has been declared between the two nations. For Hadrack of Corwick, now 18 and a scarred veteran of battle, the waiting has become intolerable. Caught between his need to fulfill his vow to his murdered family and his sworn oath to the man who freed him, Hadrack can only sit back in growing frustration as he waits impatiently for a war that will not come. Then one morning while out on patrol in the forests behind the garrison, Hadrack makes a grisly discovery that sets off a chain of events that will change the lives of everyone he knows.
