From Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen comes the next hit audiobook thriller

When you listen to this audiobook, you will make many assumptions.

You will assume you are listening to a story about a jealous ex-wife.
You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement - a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love.
You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle.
Assume nothing.

Twisted and deliciously chilling, The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage - and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.

Listen for the truth between the lies.

This audiobook contains a bonus interview with the authors.

Critiques

"Julia Whelan reads the novel in her low, pleasant voice, moving down a register to capture Richard's infuriating condescension and lightening slightly for the younger Emma. With its perfidious turns, this escapist entertainment is a fine example of the 21st century's more cynical version of the O. Henry ending." (The Washington Post

"Readers who were enthralled by B.A. Paris's Behind Closed Doors and Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl will love the skewed psychology and shifting perspectives in this domestic thriller." (Library Journal)

"A fiendishly clever romantic thriller in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. This one will keep you guessing." (Anita Shreve, New York Times best-selling author of The Stars Are Fire)

NOT that confusing! Gone Girl + Last Mrs. Parrish

Wow. Great book. If you liked Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine you will surely be a fan of this book. First of all, any reviews about this book being confusing are somewhat misleading. I admit, there is confusion between parts 1 and 2 where I had to re-listen – but this is one of the many great twists of the book. This transition from part 1 to part 2, is a crucial turning point so just understand what is happening before you move on, it is worth the re-listen or re-read. There are some details that might take a bit to become clear, but it does so at the right time, so keep going, everything is timed just right. The editor’s summary is very accurate, it’s not for appeal, it’s just true. Initially, it does seem like one of those “jealous ex-wives gone stalker” stories, but it is sooooo much more. The story unravels at a superb pace, making all the details count – everything doesn’t just wrap up at the very end like so many mystery thrillers. Even when you think you know where it’s going and even become complacent, another level is revealed - or added! Whenever I wanted more to happen, it ultimately always did. I very much appreciate when books resolve or acknowledge all the nuances and minutiae that were included or just mentioned – even if minor, and this book does just that, leaves no stone unturned. It ends excellently and perfectly satisfying. I highly recommend this book.

Ignore the reviews that claim it's confusing...

I don't want to write about the content, because I don't want to give anything away, but I think the book was great. I think what some people found confusing was the names, but I think that's intentional, and I think if we were reading the book, rather than listening, that would have cleared things up easily. You have to really pay attention to each characters and their names. I think it's great, and the twists are awesome. Like the summary says, assume nothing.

Wow, wow & Just WOW!

Any additional comments?

This book I must admit, about 30% into it I was VERY confused. I was going to start it over cause I knew I'd just missed something. I chose to wait it out and see if it would come together. I am glad I did because once I figured out what confused me I WAS BLOWN AWAY! I would like to elaborate on it but if I did I know it would be a spoiler. It was sooooooo many secrets and twists that you'd never ever see coming lol. This book is definitely going down as a favorite! They should make this into a movie.

Convoluted story of codependence.....

..... with some interesting twists. I listened to the audiobook. This is another book where there was no audible or other distinction between present and past. The references and scenes skip back and forth between present (or current), more recent past and long ago past AND each of these time segments for almost every character, making the story difficult to follow. When reference is made to a particular character, you don’t know which time segment to connect with until you read on, then determine “oh that must be from.....”. I dislike having to hunt for the story line.
Cannot remark much about the story without spoilers so I won’t comment. I will say that the story isn’t fresh. The twists and turns are, but..... still hard to follow. I will re-read the last chapter to try and determine who the character is, though at this point I may not care enough to go to the trouble.
I know “co-dependence” is a trite and dated term, but it best describes the characters’ interactions. Might throw in “diabolical” and “narcissistic” as well.

Narration is annoying / Story boring

Narration - Probably one of the worst narrations I have heard on Audible to date. The woman doing the male voice of Richard couldn't have been any worse. Even my husband who wasn't listening to the Audible commented on how bad it was. The female voice of Nellie / Vanessa was pathetic and probably ruined the character for me. She sounded whiney and immature, making it difficult to take her seriously.

Story - I finished it; that is about the only good thing I can say. The plot made you believe there would be some giant twist or revelation at the end of the story. There wasn't anything earth shattering. The attempt at a twist simply fell flat and it was obvious the authors just needed to end the story with "something." I guess I am used to better writing and this book reminded me of the kind of book you take to the beach or what I refer to as "mind fluff." It just wasn't good enough to waste an Audible credit or my time on.

The title of the book is confusing. What wife and between who? The main character was the “wife.” No other “wife” was between her and her husband. I have no idea why the book was given this title but after finishing the story, I realized it was the biggest clue this story was a dud. The shift when Nellie / Vanessa went from being a depressed drunk who seemed jealous that her ex-husband was getting married again, to suddenly becoming this strong woman who wanted to "save" her replacement, just happened without much explanation or effort. It was almost like the authors forgot what they were doing. I can't believe two people wrote this story, one being an editor, without noticing how poorly the elements of the story were tied together. This was writing at its worse.

Not for men or people with a sense of justice.

Contains mild spoilers:
I kept waiting for it to build momentum or for something interesting to happen. The same story kept repeating itself adding a little more detail each time until the picture was clearer. If the intention was to build suspense, the plot was too common place and contrived to do so. It was more long and drawn out than it needed to be as a result. Also, reading about suffering women is not my idea of entertainment. At the end, I don't believe justice was served. The reader is left with no guarantee that a sequel will not be warranted. What they call a surprise plot twist at the end is nothing more than a final revelation in the last 5-10 minutes, admittedly the best part of the story, but not worth everything it took to get there, and it would have added so much to the plot if revealed to the reader sooner.

Finally, the person reading the book has a horrible man's voice. She has a beautiful woman's voice, but every man especially Richard, sounds like he's dying. A couple of times I laughed, but mostly I just cringed. They weren't something I could get used to hearing.

Much ado about nothing

This is a psychological thriller dealing with a young dysfunctional couple that cannot keep up with their own expectations for the mariage .
Unlike what some comments suggest , this is not Gone Girl. It just doesn't have the sharpness nor the solid plot with "real" dramatic twists.. After a very promising start the story becomes confused and, frankly, a bit irrelevant.
Julia Whelan does a superb job to keep the reader hocked to the story.

A Dud!

Would you try another book from Sarah Pekkanen and Greer Hendricks and/or Julia Whelan?

No.

Has The Wife Between Us turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. It's been done way better.

What three words best describe Julia Whelan’s performance?

Fine for the most part, but when she lowered her voice to do the men, it was laughable. She sounded like the ogre in a kid's book

Could you see The Wife Between Us being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Hollywood could likely pare it down and spice it up.

Any additional comments?

The only reason I listened to the end was in the hope that something interesting would eventually happen. The feeling I had from this book was that these two writers got together and said, "Hey, those psychological thrillers about dysfunctional marriages are really popular. We should do one. How hard can it be?" The twists were ludicrous. The characters were unlikable. It was greatly padded - how many times do we need to hear about Richard's citrus cologne? I'm at a loss to see how this has been so highly rated.

You won’t be able to put it down

I downloaded the audio book because I couldn’t sit and read the book at my desk. So I opted to listen while I worked because I just had to know what happened next.

I have never read another book like it. It makes the plot twist on Gone Girl, epic as it was, look like complete child’s play.

Sophomoric & silly ...

I kept waiting for this to become the story as reviewed but it ended with me feeling mild satisfaction for a mediocre story ... THEN the epilogue happened and it was just ridiculous. It was silly (dumb) and a huge stretch to end on this note. Surprisingly written by two female authors - one of whom was an editor. Not a great story at all.

This book kept me in suspense till the very end. A story of ones woman's fight against her controlling husband. Nothing or nobody are as they seems at first.

Enttäuschend

Das war wirklich eins der schlechtesten Buecher, die ich je gelesen/ gehört habe! Die Story ist eher ein ‘Fifty Shades’-Abklatsch ohne Sex und voellig ueberzogen.

Easy listening, with good twists

A good book, not great, but what is nowadays. I usually listen to Agatha Christie, so nothing can compare. But I still enjoyed this book, although it was a bit slow and in the end the explanation of past events is very quick, almost unsatisfying, because after the whole book, you are waiting for an elaborate explanation but just get one or two instances from the past.

Best book I have read all year

So many twists and turns that your head will be spinning, yet you will never be too confused to want to read on. I loved every second of it!
