Description

When CEOs think about the supply chain, it's usually to cut costs. But the smartest leaders see supply chain and sourcing for what they can be: hidden tools for outperforming the competition. Steve Jobs, upon returning to Apple in 1997, focused on transforming the supply chain. He hired Tim Cook - and the company sped up the development of new products, getting them into consumers' hands faster. The rest is history.

Across a range of industries, once-leading companies are in trouble: Walmart, IBM, Pfizer, HP, and The Gap to name a few. But others thrive. While competitors were shutting stores, Zara's highly responsive supply chain made it the most valued company in the retail space and its founder, the richest man in Europe. The success of TJX, Amazon, Starbucks, and Airbus, is fueled by supply chain and sourcing. Showcasing real solutions, The Supply Chain Revolution will:

  • Improve customer satisfaction and increase revenue
  • Make alliances more successful
  • Simplify and debottleneck the supply chain
  • Boost retail success by managing store investment
  • Drive excellence

Technology is disrupting business models. Strategies must change. The Supply Chain Revolution flips conventional thinking and offers a powerful way for companies to compete in challenging times.

informative but dry

It had great content, however a tad dry. An insightful read for those in the industry. I would recommend to read with coffee.

Meant for upper level management

If you’re a CEO in a large company looking for help getting the most out of your company’s supply chain organization, this book is for you. If you’re a small business owner looking for direct help sourcing, this is likely not the place to be.

This was perfect! I’m new to the inner workings of Supply Chain

As a start up entrepreneur in sales and distribution for a physical product, this was an absolute gem. The chapters and topics were to the point and factual based on case studies. For anyone looking to start in distribution I would highly recommend this book. There’s so much to learn through life experience but this could be a great companion for any start up distribution company or entrepreneur. I would listen to it one more time.

Left Me Wanting More

I had high hopes for this book based on the reviews. The book is definitely full of high level wishful thinking. I like the fact that the author is pushing for companies to look at sourcing and supply chain as a more serious contributor to the overall performance of a company. I have often said that sales and revenue are driven by operational excellence. Some of the examples used were good pictures of how leveraging your supply chain can do just that. However, there is no detail on how to actually execute the strategies and/or processes and much of the book is wishful thinking for small and medium sized businesses that don't wield the power of an Apple or Ralph Lauren. What the author calls "should cost modeling" is just his consultant rehash of transparent costing widely used in the automotive industry and nothing new or innovative whatsoever. Transparent costing is a concept that is easier talked about than achieved if you cannot dictate terms to your suppliers. Additionally, pull through demand & production doesn't work in every industry or with every customer. The author's description of the process seems to assume every customer is willing to wait for the product they order and you can simply make to order all of your products and still be cost effective without large production runs. In the end the concepts reinforce something I've believed for a long time...a company's supply chain is its lifeblood and if given the focus and resources it needs can drive revenue and profitability. I just wanted more detail on how to implement and execute strategy rather than a gloss over of the concepts told through anecdotal examples from very large companies with nearly unlimited resources and buying power.

not what I was expecting

If you're looking for an overview of the supply chain with some examples this will be great. I was hoping for a deeper dive into the modern supply chain fundamentals and this book did not hit the spot.

Loved this book!!!

I used the ideas to help a friend who owns a company solve SCM related issues. Plus the book reinforced many of the concepts that I needed to master when I passed the CSCP exam !!!

Fairly repetitive

While there are definitely some useful sections throughout the book, it tends to be buried under a repetitive structure of setup and summary that makes listening to the entirety a bit predictable and boring.

Actionable insights to leverage supply chain

Great insights into how we can leverage supply chain and sourcing organizations to achieve business excellence. This book has a lot of real world examples and experiences of the author's line of work, instead of theoretical concepts and frameworks. The narrator had an excellent voice to keep me engaged throughout the book. Would be cool if there was a summary of key takeaways at the end of each chapter. Look forward to more interesting books from Suman Sarkar.
