NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITORS’ CHOICE •

An outsider who can travel between worlds discovers a secret that threatens the very fabric of the multiverse in this stunning debut, a powerful examination of identity, privilege, and belonging.

WINNER OF THE COMPTON CROOK AWARD •

“Gorgeous writing, mind-bending world-building, razor-sharp social commentary, and a main character who demands your attention - and your allegiance.” (Rob Hart, author of The Warehouse)

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR • Library Journal • Book Riot

Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying - from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn’t outrun. Cara’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total.

On this dystopian Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands. Now what once made her marginalized has finally become an unexpected source of power. She has a nice apartment on the lower levels of the wealthy and walled-off Wiley City. She works - and shamelessly flirts - with her enticing yet aloof handler, Dell, as the two women collect off-world data for the Eldridge Institute. She even occasionally leaves the city to visit her family in the wastes, though she struggles to feel at home in either place. So long as she can keep her head down and avoid trouble, Cara is on a sure path to citizenship and security.

But trouble finds Cara when one of her eight remaining doppelgängers dies under mysterious circumstances, plunging her into a new world with an old secret. What she discovers will connect her past and her future in ways she could have never imagined - and reveal her own role in a plot that endangers not just her world but the entire multiverse.

“Clever characterssurprise twistsplenty of action, and a plot that highlights social and racial inequities in astute prose.” (Library Journal)

    Refreshing

Lately "science fiction" has turned into something that can only be really categorized as action. A really interesting premise is stated in the summary, but the topic is given a few chapters at best, then it is only a couple of shallow characters being chased around from one place to another. This is different, and I am really grateful.

    love 💕

How this book addresses the divisiveness of class, race, religion, etc. through a captivating story with such ease is astounding. ❤️

Enjoyed the story but narration not so much

3.5 overall for me. It kept me interested and it had s good pace. I preferred reading this without the audio but at work I would have to put it on. The narration made the characters sound immature to me and like a YA novel. The writing at times was at fault but I guess using my own voice I would be able to correct that in my head so I wished the narrator had taken on a more mature direction.

    I didn’t love this one

This was a BOTM selection. I wanted to like it but just had a hard time staying interested. It was a little confusing and didn’t keep my interest.

Good story, good pacing, good voice

Laced with mystery and emotion, I enjoyed how the story grew the main character subtly into something much more complex. It brings both a kind of hope, and sad reality by celebrating the idea of parallel worlds. Worth the read.

    Phenomenal and imaginative

The audio quality is slightly rough in the first chapter but improves as it goes.
The world brought forth in this book is compelling and it was hard to put down once I started. characters I adore, and surprises throughout.

    boring oh so boring

Struggled to keep listening to this book. it's boring and what I thought was a sci fi turned into a story about an abused person, meeting her abuser and different selves or something. nothing sci fi is explored. I was really hoping this book would turn into an exciting read but it didn't. wish I could refund it

    Amazing

The sci-fi, the premise for Cara's multidimensional travel, the love story - all on point. But what I LOVE is who Cara is in this novel. Sci-fi, like science and its industries today, can be a little monochromatic as far as the personalities inhabiting it go. The casts of characters tend to consist of stereotypically selfless overachiever genius specialists. I like a real, flawed protagonist. Johnson writes from the perspective of someone who has suffered with skill. She crafts Cara around a raw and primary truth instilled in many who have truly been through hell and back: they carry with them the monster borne of that suffering, and it becomes their bane as well as their strength. Cara's bad is her good, and the fact that Johnson makes no pretense about that is very refreshing to me.

    I Listened for 30 hours .....

I was shocked to realize the book was only 11 hrs and 46 mins long. Finally gave up at chapter 23 out of 28. DNF, something I don't like to do especially so close to the end. As a great man once said ..... Why so dark, are you part of the DC Universe ? ..... I did not like any of the characters in the book. It's 2020 if I want sad , depressing , hopelessness I can turn on the news. **** Minor spoiler ***** The author had the main character traveling between alternate realities ..... and said NOTHING about these alternate realities ! Why not have the main character walk down the street to the quickie mart for a pack of cigarettes ? Wouldn't have changed anything in the story, unless of course that all happened in the last 5 chapters of the book. For me that was to little to late. Why do so many SCI FI books center around a great concept that the author then ignores ? Thank you to Dennis E Taylor for his entertaining series We are Legion (We are Bob). Great concept and the author uses that great concept !
