Meet Peter Paul. 10 years old, well meaning, but confused by the word of adults around him, we first meet Peter hanging from a first floor window sill in his mum's big pants. Having five sisters, an adoring mum and a heavy drinking father makes life tricky enough. But if you're a Catholic boy living in a Protestant area of Belfast in the early 1970s then your family are the least of your problems.

Toxic priests, IRA recruiters and Loyalist paramilitaries at the front door all feature. But so do some extraordinarily daft mis-adventures, Seamus Heaney and a joyous escape kick-started by punk to Dublin, the States and then... back home?

A tender, lucid and very witty coming-of-age memoir set against the backdrop of a dirty war, Peter Curran's The Sound Of Trouble is the story of a young man trying to make sense of a ruptured family, a broken city and his own uncertain future. Europe Irlande Moderne
