In America, during WWII, there were 400,000 soldiers lost to the war, almost all of them young men, many of whom were married and had just started their families when they were swept up in the war.
The wives left behind were called 'War Widows' and the children 'War Orphans'. This is the story of one of those children. Growing up in the heartland of America, this is the true story of a boy, growing into a young man in the 1950s. His mother's new marriage to a returning veteran takes them to many corners of the country and young William finds sports to be a refuge and commits to becoming a top athlete. But even with the help of extended family, showing him all the opportunities of small town life, our young mid westerner cannot find his place and heeds the call of a life beyond what is expected of him.
