In 1997, tragedy struck my family when my father, a courageous man, was killed in the streets of Jackson, Mississippi while defending my mother's honor. His life was senselessly taken, and the justice system failed him by allowing the perpetrator to go free, devaluing my father's life and ruling his murder as justified. This traumatic event changed my life as an innocent, brown-skinned girl, and its impact will be with me forever.
Losing my father to a bullet fired by a white racist driven by hate can cause a profound sense of pain and anger to fester within a young girl with brown skin. From my perspective, it feels like the ultimate goal of those with white privilege is to leave us feeling embittered and shattered.
