Description

Outspoken and fearless, Deborah has faith in God but struggles to see the potential her own life holds. As an Israelite woman, she'll marry, have a family, and seek to teach her children about Adonai - and those tasks seem to be more than enough to occupy her time. But God has another plan for her.

Israel has been under the near constant terror of Canaan's armies for 20 years, and now God has called Deborah to deliver her people from this oppression. Will her family understand? Will her people even believe God's calling on her life? And can the menace of Canaan be stopped?

With her trademark impeccable research and her imaginative storytelling, Jill Eileen Smith brings to life the story of Israel's most powerful woman in a novel that is both intriguing and inspiring.

Biblical Characters That Touch The Heart

Any additional comments?

"The Prophetess" is a remarkable book that does more than make Biblical characters come to life - the story by this remarkable author touches our very hearts in its retelling by this gifted narrator. I find the story inspiring for even in my own life as I read it, I am questioning the will of God in my own life. The story seems authentic and lifelike, perhaps because the characters are very real in the way that they evolve and change over time, in the way that they reveal their faults and either change - or not. I love the way that even the chief characters who - like the rest of mankind - sometimes have doubts about God's presence in their life when storm clouds of uncertainty and adversity hover overhead. Jill Eileen Smith makes characters of faith come to life, not only teaching us of the Biblical characters and making them seem human, but showing how God works through them despite their faults and weaknesses. This book seems truly inspired and led by a person with the eyes and heart of faith. Now more than ever, we need stories of faith such as this for a very troubled world. I look forward to more audio book versions by this great author and gifted narrator.

Very good story and narrator

The story of Debra is brief in the Bible, however, the author made the character's life story very interesting. At times the details were long winded making interrupting the flow of the story. All in all the author stayed true to the events surrounding the biblical story of Debra the judge. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Well written and researched

If you want to learn more about this biblical period then read the book.
It will help make book of Judges come alive and understand the Lord's anger towards the
Israelite nation. I found both the narrative and the narrator performance engaging.

JAEL : Real Heroine

What did you love best about The Prophetess?

Jael, expert in all phases of pitching tents, uses a tent peg and mallet for something other than setting up the tents.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Prophetess?

Adoni unleashes His Almighty Power to aide The Strong Women who deliver Israel from their enemy, the Canaanite army of King Jabin, in particular the nasty villain Sisera.

Which character – as performed by Rachel Botchan – was your favorite?

Great narrator

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Loved how God will answer prayer.

Any additional comments?

Sisera, captain of Israel’s cruel oppressor escaped and fell into the hands of a woman (Judges 4:9). Ahhh, such sweet recompense for the treacherous acts of the evil Canaanite.

Beautiful

Deborah's story is one of love, loss, and courage. Jill Eileen Smith brings to life the Prophetess who accompanied Barak into battle. She makes her human. Reminding me that the people in the Bible grieved like we do. They faced uncertainty in turbulent times as they tried to remain faithful to the law of Moses. There is a secondary story here that had more of my attention than that of Deborah and her service to Israel. A great listen from start to finish.

Need a different narrator

This might be a good book...hard to say.
I had to stop listening by chapter twenty-something. IF it was read by someone who reads with more enthusiasm than a droll college professor perhaps I could have found out. I will be remembering this narrator so that I do not accidentally choose a book by her again.

Excellent Book

I can’t speak highly enough about this book, and the narrator. I was so excited to see a story about Deborah, and couldn’t wait to read/listen to it. It exceeded expectations, and though I know its Bible based fiction, it felt so real and the characters did Deborah resonated with me. I will absolutely be purchasing a hard copy of this book!

The author did an excellent job at conveying the truth of the violence of the time without being too graphic, and I love that the narrator didn’t over exaggerate the voices. Though it is a talent, it can be so distracting when the narrators give the wrong voice to a character (in the reader/listener’s mind, of course).
