I’ve been in this life for 50 years, been trying to work out its riddle for 42, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last 35. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me.

Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things - a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure. His family was convinced he had chosen option three: Instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others. After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others.

Think of The War of Art as tough love...for yourself. Since 2002, The War of Art has inspired people around the world to defeat "resistance"; to recognize and knock down dream-blocking barriers and to silence the naysayers within us. Resistance kicks everyone's butt, and the desire to defeat it is equally as universal. The War of Art identifies the enemy that every one of us must face, outlines a battle plan to conquer this internal foe, then pinpoints just how to achieve the greatest success.

Leadership is not about titles, status and power over people. Leaders are people who hold themselves accountable for recognising the potential in people and ideas and developing that potential. This is an audiobook for everyone who is ready to choose courage over comfort, make a difference and lead. When we dare to lead, we don't pretend to have the right answers; we stay curious and ask the right questions. We don't see power as finite and hoard it; we know that power becomes infinite when we share it and work to align authority and accountability.

The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won’t make a search engine. And the next Mark Zuckerberg won't create a social network. If you are copying these guys, you aren't learning from them. It's easier to copy a model than to make something new: doing what we already know how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something familiar. But every time we create something new, we go from 0 to 1.

a good surprise, and a great book
- Écrit par : Louis le 26/01/2020
Description
From the best-selling author of Linchpin, Tribes, and The Dip comes an elegant little book that will inspire artists, writers, and entrepreneurs to stretch and commit to putting their best work out into the world.
Creative work doesn't come with a guarantee. But there is a pattern to who succeeds and who doesn't. And engaging in the consistent practice of its pursuit is the best way forward.
Based on the breakthrough Akimbo workshop pioneered by legendary author Seth Godin, The Practice will help you get unstuck and find the courage to make and share creative work. Godin insists that writer's block is a myth, that consistency is far more important than authenticity, and that experiencing the imposter syndrome is a sign that you're a well-adjusted human. Most of all, he shows you what it takes to turn your passion from a private distraction to a productive contribution, the one you've been seeking to share all along.
With this book as your guide, you'll learn to dance with your fear. To take the risks worth taking. And to embrace the empathy required to make work that contributes with authenticity and joy.

Not a book - just a series of short affirmations
I wouldn't have bought this book if I knew what it was. I'm 1.5h in and so far he's gone through 50+ chapters. It's more like Godin is reading the blurbs off of a bunch of books in a row without cracking the spine on any of them. Very surface-level and disappointing.
Also, I wish Godin would stop reading his own books. The narration is passable but would greatly benefit from a pro's touch. He emphasizes too many words and it leads to a song-song lullaby effect. Hard to focus on.

I struggle with this format
I forgot Tribes was like this too. I feel like I'm being read a list of headlines from Oprah episodes. The thing that kills me is that I find Seth so inspirational in interviews and discussing in depth the topics that he speaks about. And while I love the idea of sound bite dissemination of ideas, this format loses me almost immediately. My mind wanders and it's not wandering more deeply into the subject but wandering from boredom to other things. I hate that I didn't love this book but for me the author is better in almost every other format other than his own writing.

This book is boring.
This book is boring. Seth Godin is an interesting person. But to listen to the book being read is like listening to someone read the ingredients to hot dog over and over. He repeats himself over and over. I get it. The practice is art. How many times do you say the same thing over and over. I couldn’t make it more than 30 minutes or so. Boring boring boring :(

A funny thing happened...
As a long time fan of Seth Godin, I was excited about this book. I must admit, about a third or the way thru I found myself frustrated that the “snippets” didn’t seem to be cohesive or connected. I liked them, but failed to see how it was weaving together.
Then a funny thing happened: it all clicked. It all connected. It instantly became inspiring.
The last half of the book contained nugget after nugget and was just fantastic.
I’m not sure anything changed with the book - perhaps it was ME.
But either way, I suspect this is a book I’ll be revisiting often when I need creative and leadership inspiration.

The book actually helped
I took a blue ocean strategy approach and built some thing called niche, something people needed and wanted, some thing in which I don’t compete, but I fill holes in the marketplace.
This book woke me up to the reality of mastering the practice… But not only doing it, falling in love with everything in entails, and the biggest roadblock for me is daily failure.
Seth explains so smoothly why failure is not only a part of the practice of building something great, it’s viral… Which is totally against what “the system” teaches us today.
I cannot recommend this book enough, and I have moved it to my top five

Great again
I realy thought Seth Godin couldn't give me more of his great advice. I've read most of his books, seen his talks, participatad at his workshops. But he stiil managed to find an other interesting perspective - a new point of view. I enjoyed it a lot. And it is a great help again.
