"The Piece of String" is a short story by Guy de Maupassant that explores human suspicion, social judgment, and the destructive power of false accusations. Set in the rural village of Goderville, France, during a bustling market day, protagonist Maître Hauchecorne, a frugal Norman peasant, notices a small piece of string on the ground and bends to pick it up, despite suffering from rheumatism. His action is observed by Maître Malandain, a man with whom he has a longstanding rivalry. Later, a wallet is reported missing, and Hauchecorne is falsely accused of stealing it because he was seen bending down to pick up the string. Despite his protests and the eventual discovery of the wallet, the villagers continue to suspect him, and the shame and social ostracism weigh heavily on him until his death.
