Histoire
According to mythology, mankind used to live in 'The Tranquiline Halls': heaven. But then the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. Men took root on Roshar, the world of storms, but the Voidbringers followed. The Almighty gave men powerful suits of armor and mystical weapons, the Shardblades. Led by 10 angelic Heralds and 10 orders of knights known as Radiants, mankind finally won (or so the legends say).

They say that the Thorn of Camorr can beat anyone in a fight. They say he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. They say he's part man, part myth, and mostly street-corner rumor. And they are wrong on every count. Only averagely tall, slender, and god-awful with a sword, Locke Lamora is the fabled Thorn, and the greatest weapons at his disposal are his wit and cunning. He steals from the rich - they're the only ones worth stealing from - but the poor can go steal for themselves.

A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families, and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields. But now a troublemaker has arrived, and there is rumour of revolt.

Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Description
I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the university at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.
My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.
So begins the tale of Kvothe - currently known as Kote, the unassuming innkeeper - from his childhood in a troupe of travelling players, through his years spent as a near feral orphan in a crime riddled city, to his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a difficult and dangerous school of magic.
In these pages you will come to know Kvothe the notorious magician, the accomplished thief, the masterful musician, the dragon-slayer, the legend hunter, the lover, the thief and the infamous assassin.
The Name of the Wind is fantasy at its very best.

Amazing half a book...
Patrick Rothfuss is a out and out genius. His writing is poetic yet accurate and builds a engrossing world. It is such a let down that such a great read cannot be finished. I have listened to the slow regard for silent things, and the first half of his second book. But for some reason the second part of both books are not available in Africa. I know that Africa is a backwards continent but at least do us the decency to finish a great story. This Internet is slow enough already......

Amaising Book, Amaising Performance
What did you love best about The Name of the Wind (Part One)?
First and foremost I have to comment that the performance that Rupert Degas gave in this book was absolutely stunning. He truly gave life to the characters. Even though I read the accents as different when reading the paper version, Rupert takes his impression of the characters to hights and actually fills the characters with more life than my imagination did. Nice One Mate
What did you like best about this story?
This story was truly new and distinct for me. As one that has been mired in classic Tolkien style fantasy since childhood Patrick Rothfuss has given me a vivid new world to lose myself in.
Though the story in the first book doesn't try to paint a huge amount of detail about the world you do get a clear indication of the time and technology of the setting. What Patrick does do is give a wonderful interplay between characters that are both believable and unique. The book is very character centric ,as you would expect from a book written mainly in the first person, but it is the quality that the characters are realised that makes this book truly a work of art. I can't wait for the next book. (*looks sternly at the publishing company for not releasing it sooner >8 | )
The only problem I had with the book (and let me say this is the moan of a person that wants more than is good for him) is that it finished too soon. Like one of those batman tv shows that stops just as things get really intense. I know its not a good reason to give the story 4 stars instead of 5, but since the next book in the series is not available in australia we can all just blame the publisher ;)

I Simply loved this book - except some character flaws that make these characters all the way more realistic and eventually human.., I really can't find anything to criticize. Great book
A great story with several cool magic systems. The reading/performance is mostly fine, but when he gives a character a dialect it sometimes gets impossible to understand. And whenever there's a song; he starts whispering so quietly it can't be heard.

Great story without a question, but ...
The speaker does a really bad job in characterizing the characters and exaggerates it with his interpretation he voices beyond the unrecognizability of the mood of the book. Hes having a great voice, but it often feels like he doesn't really know the book.

Rather boring
After raving reviews on some social media I was expecting a very special new fantasy world, but was sorely disappointed. The world building wasn't anything that hasn't been done in various classics like LOTR etc. The hero, although supposedly incredibly clever, was neither interesting nor likeable. Most relevant characters were male, and the female characters lacked definition. The whole story went on and on without getting more exciting, and the intervowen love story didn't manage to make the whole thing more interesting. The main love interest was supposed to be mysterious and amazingly beautiful, but just managed to seem annoying. The reader although excellent at accents, tended to be sloppy with his endings, which was almost unbearable. All in all not a very enjoyable listening experience. I kept hoping it would be getting better, but gave up at the third part.

Großartig
The Name of the Wind ist eins der besten Fantasybücher der letzen 20 Jahre.
B. beim Song of Ice and Fire deutlich besser.
Sehr angenehm ist, dass die Kapitel nicht sooo lang sind, was bei mir mit dem Einschlaftimer bis Kapitelende gut passte.
Genug geschrieben - Day 2 wartet.

AMAZING
I was addicted to this book. I had to stop listening sometimes, because one bad thing happened after another and it was a bit much. But highly recommend. I found the performance spectacular. There has been a review made here about quality of sound. But I had absolutely no problems. Also another review was made about the accents/ the way that Rupert Degas portrayed the characters being too over the top. I have to disagree. I am a native English speaker (Australian) and LOVED his use of different English/Scottish/Irish accents. I applaud him for this and found it added to the story.

I have seldom heard such a good performance this was simply amazing. If a person would be talking in an outlandish accented way it was actually hard to understand them! Very emmersive

Best fantasy book of all times.
Unchallenged fantasy book. I love Rothfusses eye for the little details and absolute perfection. This has been my second read and the book still amazes me!
