    a life-changing read !

When I saw that so many comments were written about this book I was curious . I can see why now .....
I "read" the audio version which was beautifully narrated by Carey Mulligan - a good narrator is SO important .
Although you want to get to the end of the book to see what happens to Nora you don't really want it to end - or maybe just go on for ever !
Philosophy , psychology, lessons in life - a great book .
Will there be more like it from Matt Haig ? I hope so .

    A great book!

I wasn t convinced by the summary of the plot at first but this book kept showing up in my recommandation. I thought the subject was overdone but I was wrong and I wasn't able to predict the ending. I really had a great time. Carey Mulligan's performance is impeccable. Don't hesitate.

    Lengthy at times

The story is well put, but it takes some easy paths and you know where it’ll end when you start it. Some bits are quite lengthy and the style is sometimes rather repetitive, but it’s a nice story to hear and it makes you think about your own life path.

A fun, touching and comforting adventure

I really enjoyed Carey's performance. The story is beautiful and definitely worth a listen/read, although I found the writing a smidge redundant at times. Overall, it's a fun and original adventure, that leaves you with a feeling of renewal and motivation!

    Absorbing

You know how sometimes it takes time to get into a story, to feel with the characters? This is not that kind of story; I was right into it after a mere pages / minutes. It has some more shallow patches in the story, some lengths, but it is a really sweet and interesting story I can only recommend. The reading is beautiful.

    Laugh, cry, read this book!

Really enjoyed this book and the concept of exploring the regrets people have in their life. One of those books that stays in your head long after the final chapter. It’s dark, but funny, sad, but joyful. I couldn’t stop listening it’s compelling. Made me laugh and cry all at once.

    Beautiful read

It was easy to anticipate much of the storyline, but in this case that didn't take anything away from the experience.

Carey Mulligan was flawless except for her Newfoundland pronunciation.

Matt Haig is fast becoming one of my favourite authors in both adult and children's fiction. His style is imaginative yet grounded in a wonderful fashion.

I would recommend this book to anyone.

Interesting, imaginative, meaningful and gently intriguing.
Carey Mulligan's narration is exquisite, brilliant,
Audible needs more talented narrators like Carey Mulligan, it makes all the difference.
    Highly recommended .

Loved the story, lukewarm about the ending.

The book felt exciting & compelling, but the ending felt a bit pat. It was the „nice, expected“ ending. I guess I wanted something more surprising.

I enjoyed the time I spent listening to it.

This book is absolutely wonderful. It shook me awake. It made me cry. It reminded me why I'm happy to be alive. (And Carey Mulligan's narration is PERFECT.)

    A magnificent, thoughtful story

As a person who struggles with depression, the book felt like a mirror being held up to my face. At times it was hard to get through because Nora's story felt so real, and far too familiar. I would recommend this book to anyone who has met depression before, or who would like to understand the mind of someone who does. Matt Haig does a lovely job by weaving an entertaining, yet overall very thoughtful story. It goes to show how little things can really change everything.
A welcome side effect of reading The Midnight Library is I am now thinking of actually living my own life, rather than just wandering through it.

Could have been a great story. It is not.

The core idea is brilliant and could have been a great story. It is not.

Learning to accept oneself, what one has become, one's life and the decisions one has made is not a new idea. But do we really need to shed regrets by being shown that all other possible lives we could have lived were in fact far worst? I think not. We do make mistakes, we do make wrong decisions - out of cowardice, ignorance or whatever other reason - but ultimately we just learn to make peace with ourselves, to say sorry to those whom we have hurt, say sorry in our minds to those we failed to love or show our love and to be grateful for the life we have had, hoping, should we ever have another chance at living, to do better.

The problem is not just that most of Nora's regrets seem to me to be trivial and/or somewhat ego-centric. An Olympic swimmer? A rock star? Wanting to have gone to Australia? Perhaps a life as a glaciologist has some merit. Also the one so called perfect life which turns out not to be so perfect because in it she failed to help one child make the best of himself, it makes no sense whatsoever. Just another life with regrets. No matter which life we might have led, which path we might have chosen, it would always be to the advantage or disadvantage of someone, it would always cause suffering to someone, known or unknown to us.

The trouble is that after the first virtual life, the story-telling becomes monotonous and the final long monologue of enlightenment is excruciating. At that point I found myself wanting to wind fast-forward. What is the core message? Be happy with what you have, things could be worst? Or, make the best of what you have been dealt?

Furthermore, I have no idea what the reference to string-theory has anything to do with the story or with multi-universes in particular. Nor is it clear to me why the author keeps harping on about philosophy since hardly any philosophical thought enters the narrative. Oddly enough in the one life where Nora is a philosophy teacher at Cambridge hardly any of the books in the house she lists are about philosophy. You get the feeling that the only book the author has actually read which might pass for philosophy is Walden by Henry David Thoreau. Is it a philosophy book? A philosophy of living perhaps and not really a book on philosophy - go out there in the wilderness, build yourself a hut and live simply and enjoy the simple life. Don't many of us wish we had the means to do just that? Or may be not.

The book has had good reviews, so perhaps it is just me who has failed to appreciate its depth. It is rare that I do not finish reading (or in this case listening to) a book, but I was close to doing just that. It is certainly not one of the books which I would want to re-read. Sorry.

    Nice story, terrible narrator.

Story is ok, but not terrible deep. Narrator is horribly boring though; sounds like she's reading a shopping list. 0 emotions. Ruined the experiences for me.

    Cool idea, shallowly executed

Still inspiring idea, but often you want to face-palm over the protagonist's stubborn way of dealing in the same helpless way with different, although not too challenging situations.

I like Matt Haig‘s style of writing. I just feel like this is philosophy for the mass. It‘s a bit too easy to foresee and easy. I would have expected something a little better.

    I loved reading this book

A love declaration for life itself and all its possibilities. The plot gets to the core of the main character's psyche. The atmosphere is not light hearted and I was deeply moved while listening to this book. Struggling with depression, you can still experience hope and so many different emotions. Life can still be intense. Such a wonderful book!

"It's a wonderful life" with multiple possibilitie

A modern spin on "it's a wonderful life" with multiple possible lives/universes. The atmosphere and the pace of the story was a little heavier than I had anticipated by comparison with the other books by the author I have read/listened to. In the end it was an interesting storyline, however.
