On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find - her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region. Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid.

Histoire
The Glass Hotel begins at the end, with a fall: a woman plummeting from the deck of a cargo ship, her body quickly swallowed by the sea. It is a death that happens between continents, outside of jurisdictions: a death that will likely go unremarked and unsolved. Years earlier a massive Ponzi scheme implodes in New York, taking with it the finances, hopes, and lives, of hundreds of people. The Glass Hotel is a novel about the interconnected lives tangled up in two very different tragedies.

Description
What if you could try out all the lives you could have lived and pick one? Would you choose differently?
'Between life and death there is a library,' she said. 'And within that library, the shelves go on for ever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices. Would you have done anything different, if you had the chance to undo your regrets?'
Thirty-four-year-old Nora's life could be better. She's lonely, single and has just lost her job. Her cat dying feels like the last straw. What else is there to live for? Then she finds a library between life and death where she gets to try all the other lives she could have lived.
The Midnight Library is a gloriously relatable novel about life, death and the in-between. It is about finding hope, playing chess, dumping regrets and picking the right people around you.

a life-changing read !
When I saw that so many comments were written about this book I was curious . I can see why now ..... I "read" the audio version which was beautifully narrated by Carey Mulligan - a good narrator is SO important . Although you want to get to the end of the book to see what happens to Nora you don't really want it to end - or maybe just go on for ever ! Philosophy , psychology, lessons in life - a great book . Will there be more like it from Matt Haig ? I hope so .

A great book!
I wasn t convinced by the summary of the plot at first but this book kept showing up in my recommandation. I thought the subject was overdone but I was wrong and I wasn't able to predict the ending. I really had a great time. Carey Mulligan's performance is impeccable. Don't hesitate.

The Midnight Library
I loved every second of this story. The performance was superb and the concept of the library one I think I will remember for always. I lost my brother to depression and it is comforting to think that maybe he too ended up inside the midnight library in one life. Mrs Elm is a superb character. We all need a Mrs Elm in our lives. This book should be prescribed to anyone suffering from Depression or Anxiety. It is - in itself - the gift of life, and one can’t but hope that if listened to by someone at the right time, it might save a life one day. Karen Webb (Author of “A Stranger in Paris”)

Beautiful read
It was easy to anticipate much of the storyline, but in this case that didn't take anything away from the experience. Carey Mulligan was flawless except for her Newfoundland pronunciation. Matt Haig is fast becoming one of my favourite authors in both adult and children's fiction. His style is imaginative yet grounded in a wonderful fashion. I would recommend this book to anyone.

It is as good as they say
This book will stay with me, and I will listen to it again, for comfort. It is so imaginative, so good at describing life as the mess that it can sometimes be. There is so much hope in this book, I wish all those who feel or has at sometime felt hopeless or helpless would get the chance to read it. So that would mean most of us I guess. The narration is brilliant, and the tone of voice fits the main character perfectly.

I loved reading this book
A love declaration for life itself and all its possibilities. The plot gets to the core of the main character's psyche. The atmosphere is not light hearted and I was deeply moved while listening to this book. Struggling with depression, you can still experience hope and so many different emotions. Life can still be intense. Such a wonderful book!

"It's a wonderful life" with multiple possibilitie
A modern spin on "it's a wonderful life" with multiple possible lives/universes. The atmosphere and the pace of the story was a little heavier than I had anticipated by comparison with the other books by the author I have read/listened to. In the end it was an interesting storyline, however.

A book to read when regrets are heavy
I was amazed when I realised that the narration made me feel the fear of Nora. The book teaches without preaching. It calms the mind by making the reader want to think about uncomfortable questions. It describes the thought process that leads to depression without stigmatising the sickness.
