Description

The classic, nationally best-selling book that first articulated the principles of lean production, with a new foreword and afterword by the authors.

When The Machine That Changed the World was first published in 1990, Toyota was half the size of General Motors. Twenty years later Toyota passed GM as the world’s largest auto maker. This management classic was the first book to reveal Toyota’s lean production system that is the basis for its enduring success.

Authors Womack, Jones, and Roos provided a comprehensive description of the entire lean system. They exhaustively documented its advantages over the mass production model pioneered by General Motors and predicted that lean production would eventually triumph. Indeed, they argued that it would triumph not just in manufacturing but in every value-creating activity from health care to retail to distribution.

Today The Machine That Changed the World provides enduring and essential guidance to managers and leaders in every industry seeking to transform traditional enterprises into exemplars of lean success.

Good book of history of Lean

The book is about the history of lean production versus mass production and all its consequences around the globe. It doesn't talk about any in depth technical information about lean production.

only half useful for the modern reader

A fascinating treatise on car manufacture c.1990. Despite many good ideas, the book becomes dated halfway through--devolving into inside baseball on the forecasted fortunes of various firms in the 1990s. Worth skimming through the first half and then skipping ahead to the afterword which corrects some major errors in the first half!

great history of lean and manufacturing

the narrator has a very breathy voice that took about 30 seconds to get used to it and I find it terrific, wonderful story that applies to today

very interesting, but a little boring at times

I like the book overall, it kind of dragged the little, but was pretty interesting and insightful when it comes to the manufacturing process

Good summary of Toyota compared to other auto makers

If you want to learn about the research that introduced the term Lean, along with a breakdown of how Toyota runs their business differently than other automakers, you will enjoy this book. Great for lean practitioners. Includes metrics on why TPS is a better approach than mass production.

Interesting

Its some kind of a historical guide through lean production. Well done. A summary at the end of each chapter would help to reflect the learned issues.
