    Description

The Last Emperox is the thrilling conclusion to the award-winning, New York Times and USA Today best-selling Interdependency series, an epic space opera adventure from Hugo Award-winning author John Scalzi.

The collapse of The Flow, the interstellar pathway between the planets of the Interdependency, has accelerated. Entire star systems - and billions of people - are becoming cut off from the rest of human civilization. This collapse was foretold through scientific prediction...and yet, even as the evidence is obvious and insurmountable, many still try to rationalize, delay and profit from, these final days of one of the greatest empires humanity has ever known.

Emperox Grayland II has finally wrested control of her empire from those who oppose her and who deny the reality of this collapse. But "control" is a slippery thing, and even as Grayland strives to save as many of her people form impoverished isolation, the forces opposing her rule will make a final, desperate push to topple her from her throne and power, by any means necessary. Grayland and her thinning list of allies must use every tool at their disposal to save themselves, and all of humanity. And yet it may not be enough.

Will Grayland become the savior of her civilization...or the last emperox to wear the crown?

    Wait that’s it

Worth the read to wrap up loose ends but really feels like this one was phoned in. Just meh, good quarantine listen if your doing house work, but it left the world building and exploration the first books did so well with behind. Wil Wheaton’s narration is solid as usual.

I bought 3 audiobooks for this crap.

I rate, but don’t write reviews often... but this ending seemed like slapped together crap from an author that got board half way through. When I picked up this series I didn’t think he was going to phone the ending in. Not only did the way he (not to give it away) leaned out the character pool leave very unfulfilling ending to character arcs, but the lack of details and thought behind it telegraphed the end of the book. It left only two possabilities. Either he left the ending twist to be written by an 8th grader, or it was going to end the way it did. There was no other way for it to end.
On the plus side the narration was great.

    What a let down

After everything, this is just a giant letdown. Will did a great job, but it’s like 3/4 of the way through the book Scalzi realized he hadn’t done anything to wrap it up, and then tried to do it all at once.

What a way to ruin the series. Thanks Scalzi.

Wil Wheaton did an amazing job, like normal.

Scalzi took a great series and ended it so badly, I have no words. If you want experience the awful ending like I have, go ahead a buy this book.

    You have been warned!

A Solid End To a Trilogy

I typically don't like planned trilogies but my affection for Scalzi's writing isn't typical. It took me a bit to warm up to The Collapsing Empire-two listens, but once I did, I fell hard (in contrast, I immediately loved Lock In). Wil Wheaton, as always, is an absolute pleasure of a narrator, though I admit to my bias in that, super geek that I am, I probably would enjoy his narration regardless.

Good scifi requires a foundation in good science and this is no exception to Scalzi's collection. Accidentally relevant, the lessons in this trilogy pack a punch and I look forward to reading the next lesson.

P.S. without spoiling anything plot-wise, I have to say that, "glitter dumpster of a mother" is my favorite phrase now.

    wtf happened with this novel

I loved the first two, but this one was complete horsesh!t. I'm not entirely sure what Scalzi was aiming for, but he certainly didn't hit it. The performance was good, the story was not.

    Disappointing ending

A disappointing ending to the trilogy, with a deus ex machina conclusion. Has little of the spirit of the first two books.

    Surprising ending

well written, fantastic story that leaves you sitting on the edge of your seat or swearing outloud at the events that take place. the ending floored me, and left me sobbing.

boring end to a hollow series. no plot development

seriously, the premise had potential and instead it ends up just being a want-to-be game of thrones. no story development, and the most interesting elements to the story are glazed over for the sake of convenient plot changes. wheaton is not the best voice for the story either.

The dance floor is rented, the band is paid

It seemed a tight story which didn't waste a lot of time in tying up loose ends. All of the characters developed in the previous books are back and given a moment to shine. The story however seemed to suffer at the expense of the goal of this book. Which was to wind things down and bring things to a type of conclusion.. with no promise to follow up with the characters later. It rather felt like the last episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.. complete with a 'Q' stand in.. to answer all questions and teach a few lessons. I found myself grasping at threads of story lines that could have easily spun themselves off into entire novels.. but they were left as stage dressing for the reader to just imagine what happened to that story line.. but this book had one mainline core to its purpose which it relentlessly pursued to the end. In the end it reminded me of how they ended the Star Wars Saga in the most recent movies.. regardless of what the fans wanted.. or might have preferred.. this had to be the end. Oh well.

    Disappointing

To let a very important character die in just a few minor sentences to create a sudo deus ex machina for ending a book isn't really good writing in my opinion.
Also there is too much third person narrator stuff and too less actual stuff happening with actual dialog and interaction in the book.
Alltogether it felt like a short story with not much actual happened in the end, beside the sudden forced part at the very end. Just like it was just done to finish the book already.
It feels like the book was supposed to be much longer.
It really feels unfinished and hastley put together.

    Tough it out

After the first hour I stopped listening and considered returning this book to audible. And the reason for that: it was an almost uninterrupted surge of profanities and shouting and threats by not-so-nice-people, all of them voiced by Wil Wheaton who thus also was a huge disappointment.

But after a three-months-pause I continued listening. And the story came back on track, re-joined the arc from the first two books and became more and more gripping as it progressed towards the finale. And since quote a lot of other characters reappeared Wil Wheaton´s narrative also achieved its normal/excellent level.

So my advise to listeners: tough it out. In the end this is an intelligent and moving tale. But for those who do not know the first two books yet: get them first, otherwise you will be totally confused.

    Mediocre ending

Instead of writing an epic story about the handling of society with the collapse the author takes the short cut.

    Very boring

Nothing is happening in this book. Instead of writing bloated three books, John Scalzi should have written one book. If you remove all obscenities, intercourse descriptions and loudly spoken reasoning about quite simple matters, almost nothing remains. I have waited until the half of the book was finished. Nothing has happened so far. Pity of my time. At least I can return this book and get my credits back.

    Back to full

The Interdependency cycle in full blossom again. The witful or spiteful or profane characters we all know and love in their sneaky, twisted and sometimes outright crazy musings. Fast and hilarious dialogues included. And Wil Wheaton again perfectly nails it and gives the whole thing the double punch, which makes me even forgive for a somewhat disney-ish ending. But boy, do they deserve it...

    Ok but somewhat disappointing...

Wil Wheaton is doing great, again! I was really looking forward to this book but, well, how to put it, I was somewhat disappointed with the solution. There were so many possibilities - and in the end I was wondering about the many pages about fictious flow physics...that did not really contribute to the story and the finale...
Ok, in a nutshell: the end of this trilogy is below the capabilities of the author. Like it was written in a hurry. Sorry.
