Description

In this pioneering contribution to the emerging men's movement, Robert Moore, a Jungian psychoanalyst and Douglas Gillette, a mythologist, examine the inner King - one of the four archetypes on the male psyche. The inner King integrates power and nurturing, firmness and caring, courage and creativity, self-affirmation and self-sacrifice. From his central position between the world of imagination and the world of action, the King within challenges every man to take up his own scepter, to dream and to make them come true. The King Within both responds to the needs being formulated by the men's movement and addresses the larger questions of male psychology.

Compelling Psychology

Through historical studies, psychological profiles of popular ideologies in both the media and in religion, the authors (Moor and Gillette) seek to answer the questions, What is Masculinity? Is it important? Where did it go and why can't we seem to find it?

Throughout the twentieth century, primarily in Western Culture, we've lost the ability to separate being a Boy from being a Man. There are no longer any defined qualities that everyone recognizes as being "manly." Many people (not merely feminists) decry men as brutes. Phrases like "be a man" or "man up" are sexist and crush the creativity of our children. The authors cite the absence of a father in many homes in recent years is an example of why its important that we soon discover, and teach our sons, exactly what it means to be a man. That men, through the help of our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, wives, lovers, and friends, must discover the King that resides in all of us.

This book raised my eyebrows a lot. The authors tend to treat wide sweeping subjects like religion and politics as examples for their psychological evaluation. If those subjects are touchy for you, then just be warned. Every so often the authors let their own internal biases slip inside this document in sarcastic gibes that made me cringe, but those moments are few. And for the most part this book is inspirational and eye-opening. I recommend it highly.

The answer to a lot of my life's struggles

This book is extremely powerful. It has guided me to a great new path where I am striving to master my king archetype. I've experienced years of therapy, self help books, meditation, etc, and I have to say, this book would have helped me even more tremendously if I had read it years ago.

Every Man Can Benefit

Men need the King archetype more than ever today. This information opened my eyes for myself and will be very helpful for my son as he grows into manhood. Our society blames “men” for a variety of ills without acknowledging the blessing true balanced masculinity brings.

Excellent book on heart and intentions

This book really hit a heart and spiritual connection with a force to be on science religion and ideas. And it shows that we have all the best intentions if we were to just choose to. It really reminded me of another book from Jordan Peterson the 12 rules for life.

For the roadmap to the inner King, very confusing

In accordance to some previous reviews, it is not enough to listen to this book once. On one hand, it is because the book deals with complicated psychological analysis of the human psyche. On the other hand, the language used in this book is very complex. Sometimes I felt like the authors cared less about conveying the message clearly, than trying to sound "cleaver". As according to authors this book is the roadmap to the inner King, it is not very clear roadmap. It is confusing and makes you feel like you lost the main path.
The narration does not help here either. It is fast paced and there is no much emphasis on the key statements and ideas.
Overall, The King Within: Accessing the King in the Male Psyche is probably one of those books that is better to read than to listen. Maybe then also I will be able to access my own inner King...

Enlightening and motivational.

This audio felt too short. It ended as I was just getting into it. I can't wait to get the full book so I can explore these concepts more deeply. The audiobook is a warmup, you must buy this book.

Robert Moore Legacy

Brilliant legacy of Moore's elaboration upon C G Jung belief that words, dreams, images & waking life are equally real.

For King archetypes a full blue print

Great find. After being really into the concept this series is awesome. So thankful. It esp clarifies the terms of the wounded child and shadow.
