Description
Dawn of Fire Book 5
A depleted Battle Group Praxis returns the slain heir of Kamidar to the Knight world's ruling family – and its embittered ruler, the Iron Queen Orlah.
Listen to it because
Nick Kyme continues the story of the Indomitus Crusade, as a vicious feud breaks out on the Knight world of Kamidar – and the agents of Abaddon are only too happy to stoke the flames.
The story
A war-weary Battle Group Praxis arrives at the Knight world of Kamidar, ruled by the Iron Queen Orlah, to return the queen's slain daughter and heir, who died in Guilliman's name. In truth, the Imperium's mission here is twofold: to strip Kamidar of its resources in order to resupply the flagging armada, and to prepare the Ironhold Protectorate to become part of the defensive Anaxian Line, a crucial bulwark for the Indomitus Crusade.
Yet Kamidar's Knights have survived for many years without the Imperium's aid, and what should have been a simple reunion between allies soon becomes a vicious feud. As division turns loyal souls against one another, the agents of Abaddon move in the shadows, seeking to manipulate this growing rift to their own ends. Can the Imperium restrain itself from laying an old ally asunder, or will the Hand of Abaddon arise triumphant, halting the Avenging Son's reclamation in its path?

Tactical disappointment
The tactical acumen of Nick is not on show in this book. The tactical situations are almost laughable at times. Nick also seems to lose perspective during certain battles. Certain characters seem to swap places in the fight. Almost every imperial character makes stupid decisions that allow the plot to move forward. It feels like you're reading a horror movie where the victims make stupid decisions so that they can either die or be herded into a bad situation.
Nick also dives into social commentary. The women are all AMAZING and SO FIERCE and SO MAGNIFICANT. Whenever Kesh shoots something it's the best shot ever. Whenever the Queen is mentioned, she's the sheer image of female power. Whenever most of the males are mentioned, they are either annoying, incompetent, fearful, or just disappointing. Literally, there's a woman who's trying to get guns out of a closet, and Nick comments about her "strong arms". Like, wut? No one cares about a woman's "strong arms" when she's trying to get a firearm. This is supposed to be a story about a battle between two people and the man is demeaned constantly. The Queen even says "Why do MEN always want to kill me?!?!" I thought that 38k years might have changed feminism but nope. Men are still apparently toxic and women don't need no man. it's stupid. Whenever the author would say "people", he would say "men and women". However, he does sometimes use "men" only but it when he's calling them cowards. Apparently women can't be cowards.
The Black Templars are completely incompetent. Seriously. So dumb.
The smartest guy in the book is the bad guy. He does things that he shouldn't have if the Imperials were competent, but remember, everyone but the bad guys are incompetent. Even Space Marines just let Knights step on them instead of jumping out of the way. Because...reasons...
The ending was extremely disappointing. It follows the same concept as the other books: bad guys somehow get away with their objectives with no issue. In this book, that happens in a completely and utterly laughable conclusion. I mean, seriously, it doesn't even make sense how the bad guy does what he does.
The plot is truly disappointing and if you skipped this book you wouldn't miss a single thing about the series as a whole. Nothing is gained by this book. The bad guys don't lose, get everything they want and more, and the good guys just suck and lose everything. Nick also doesn't know how to write women so he writes them as if they are men. Not sure if he's married or not because he literally makes women better men.
This book does nothing to move the plot forward. Pass on it if you don't want to waste money listening to men be toxic, women be awesome, and the bad guys just win and win and win.

Skip it.
Go read the 2-star comment "Tactical disappointment" by T. Larson in the comment section. That comment basically summarizes what I feel in the same way.
Just skip this book; it is not fun at all. Discarding the issue of political correctness, this book's plot and character motivations are really messed up. Many characters make completely incomprehensible and deliberate decisions just to create plot conflict.
At the same time, the entire story plot is scattered. There are too many characters, but each character and event is poorly developed or explained. Also, if, like me, you are listening to this book to explore the workings of a Knight World and the operations of the knights, you will be disappointed that the knights are just a convenient tool to crush the Space Marines while being used to advance the plot.

Awful writing somewhat saved by great voice acting
This title fell well short of the standard set by the dawn of fire series as a whole. Felt very shoehorned & cobbled together, with questionable decisions by main characters, great characters from previous books being killed with very little effort on behalf of the antagonists, and things that happened just happening without any preamble. Only thing that saved this title from a 1* rating in my view was the voice actor. He did an excellent job with the turd sandwich he was tasked with reading.

Characters no one cares about.
Game of thrones red wedding rip-off, leads to hypocrite queen whining about blah blah blah honor, blah blah blah, oaths, blah blah blah me me me. Didn't get sucked into this story as it was poorly written, with the characters really having to have had their heads shoved way up their rears to not see MANY of the "twists/reveals" coming.
Don't bother with this story, go next.

Incoherent actions on the part of every character.
Poor quality book moving from scene to scene because it's required. no connection to the next scene, don't worry., the characters will just be bafflingly stupid in order to get you there.

Often Incoherent and Boring
I like the narration, but I struggled to keep track of all the characters I never connected with, which was all of them. This wasn't the next part of the series I was looking forward to, it's something else for a different audience than me, that's for sure.
