Description

The seven gods of Order had ruled unchallenged for centuries, served by the adepts of the Circle in their bleak northern castle on the Star Peninsula. But for Tarod - the most enigmatic and formidable sorcerer in Circle's ranks - a darker affinity had begun to call. Threatening his beliefs, even his sanity, it rose unbidden from beyond time; an ancient and deadly adversary that could plunge the world into madness and chaos - and whose power might rival that of the gods themselves. And though Tarod's mind and heart were pledged to Order, his soul was another matter...

Great book, poor performance

I love this series and was excited to listen after reading it again and again for the past 25 years. But the performance leaves much to be desired. The narrator stumbles often, mispronounces words and is rather dull. This book deserves a better reader.

A thrilling, yet romantic tale of Order vs Chaos!!

I love this trilogy! It has EVERYTHING! A thrilling, suspenseful adventure with romance and friendship to jealousy and betrayal. The concept of Order vs Chaos and the truth that one cannot exist without the other, while leading you on a fast paced adventure of love and loyalty with the consequences of judgement and betrayal. Brilliant!

What would the Gods of Order be like?

If the gods of order and chaos existed what would they and their followers be like? This series gives its vision of this universe. Order isn’t good but it’s not free of evil. Like the god of the Old Testament they are about following the rules. Chaos isn’t evil but it isn’t good either. They are about doing what they want. A boy is born under strange circumstances and when he exhibits great and terrible power in his early teens, his village tries to kill him. But through luck he escapes and starts a new life with the servants of the gods of order. He is raised to be an initiate of order. But when powers are revealed again and determined to be from the gods of chaos, do they aid him? Or do they cast him out too? The production quality of the book is poor. There is a lot of static in the recording like it was converted from cassette tape. The reader only does one voice and pauses at all wrong points. There is no emotion or tension. It’s a straight reading.

Great book - mediocre narration

I have loved this series for a long time, so I was unsurprised to enjoy it again, in audio format. There are subtleties I hadn't picked out before that has changed my views on a number of characters, but overall, I still enjoyed this book. The narration has issues, but is passable. If you treat this version like a matron in your family is reading it for the casual enjoyment of a group of friends or family, and allow for the occasional verbal stumble or mispronunciation, then you can enjoy this format just fine. There is the occasional tinny echo sound, but it's all tolerable. Frankly, if you can overlook the mediocre narration, I think you'll enjoy the novel, and it's successors. This series has long been one of my go-to re-reads.
