    Description

    "The Lord is my shepherd."

Thus begins the most beloved of all Psalms - and thus begins a thousand-year journey through the Bible. Prophets, apostles, and Jesus himself took up this image from David, reshaping it, developing it, and applying it to their own situations and needs. Kenneth Bailey uses his celebrated insights into Middle Eastern culture, especially his familiarity with Middle Eastern shepherding customs, to bring new light and life to our understanding of this central image of the Christian faith. With each of nine major Old and New Testament passages, Bailey reveals the literary artistry of the biblical writers and summarizes their key theological features. His work is also enriched by his unique access to very early Middle Eastern commentaries on these passages, bringing fresh understanding from within the mind-set of these ancient worlds. The Good Shepherd invites us to experience a rich, biblical feast of ethical, theological, and artistic delights.

    From a farmer

I have not herded Sheep but I have farmed for 30 yrs. My background helped me understand where he was coming from. Thank you. I have a Bachelors degree but never took a literature class. The book is studies from several perspectives including literature which I really appreciated.

You will never look at the Good Shepherd the same

What did you love best about The Good Shepherd?

It's application to different books of the Bible. Dr. Bailey helps you see inter meaning in the scriptures.

What other book might you compare The Good Shepherd to and why?

Any of Dr. Bailey's books provide you a opportunity to look at scripture through the eyes of those living during that era.

    Which scene was your favorite?

This is impossible to answer. I enjoyed every chapter of the book. It enlightens my understanding of the scriptures.

    good but odd presentation

Good book but you need to sit and listen or you will get lost in the analogy.

    Not a good audio book

This could have been done much better. Seemed more like a syllabus than a book. Cameo descriptions were meaningless without visuals.

Good but difficult to follow IMO

I think the research and the academics present in the book is outstanding. This scholarly study is difficult to follow as there is no accompanying PDF as is present in many audio books and obviously were present in the written book because the figures are referred to regularly.
This audio book is actually an academic course and should be treated as such with Bible, pen and notepad in hand as you listen. There is a lot packed in here. I didn't agree with some of the conclusions but that's OK, it was thought provoking.
I was disappointed with the length of some chapters as they were so long and drawn out it became tedious to continue to listen.
Loved the topic, loved the research, wish this could be brought under editors like the ones that produce "the great courses" series. Small criticism for a great work by Dr. Bailey IMO.

    Great book needs different reader

I thoroughly enjoyed Bailey’s detailed study and breakdown of various “sheep/shepherd” texts that provided me with deeper insight of Jesus, The Good Shepherd. However, I was distracted every time the reader read the word “disciple” because his “p” was pronounced like an “f”. The word appears a number of times throughout the book. It’s just a minor idiosyncrasy, but because the word appeared so many times, I thought I would mention the distraction of the mispronunciation.

Can feel very technical but relax, learn, enjoy

The Good Shepherd was always my favorite image of Jesus as a child. I felt a kindred spirit with my Lord as I cared for my grandfather's cattle and my own calves; feeding, protecting, searching, and calling for them after a storm would knock down fencing in the pasture. The author tells excellent stories from shepherds in those ancient herding lands to give the reader a deeper understanding. The author also shows the reader a deeper understanding of Jesus telling us that He does what He sees His Father do. For all academic comparisons a structure is examined, and can feel very technical at first for the reader, then stories in scripture are compared. This book does an excellent job of progressing through the 1,000 years of scriptures with constant illustrations of the cultural norms that the modern western reader needs to fully appreciate the amazing story of The Good Shepherd.

    good content. annoying performance.

If I were the author of this book I would be so sad to hear the audio performance after so much research was put into its writing. The content is very interesting and compelling, but for some reason the reader keeps pronouncing the word disciple as "disifull". it is incredibly annoying and distracting. I get it. We all have words we think we know but we really didn't. I thought spinach was pronounced "spinash" until I was in college, but then again I wasn't being paid to read a book professionally. If you reading in audiobook professionally, please take a minute to study the correct pronunciation of words.. especially when the author obviously but so much research into the content. I honestly had to stop listening because, as good as the content was, I could not listen to one more mention of Jesus' "disifulls" without screaming!!!

    Wonderful

A profoundly insightful and also deeply scholarly study of what Jesus intended by naming himself the Good Shepherd.
