Sunday Times Crime Book Club Pick.

Mail on Sunday Thriller of the Week.

Sixty-two days after the disappearance...

A man is arrested in the small town of Avechot. His shirt is covered in blood. Could this have anything to do with a missing girl called Anna Lou?

What really happened to the girl?

Detective Vogel will do anything to solve the mystery surrounding Anna Lou's disappearance. When a media storm hits the quiet town, Vogel is sure that the suspect will be flushed out. Yet the clues are confusing, perhaps false, and following them may be a far cry from discovering the truth at the heart of a dark town.

I really loved the audio book until right shortly before the end. The reader John Telfer is just great and can swap between voices / characters so easily. Donato Carrisi wove a story which sprang backwards and forwards between the days around the time of Christmas and New Year and increased my curiosity from minute to minute. I could hardly put the book down. The story held several surprises which were well prepared for but which the reader wouldn`t have guessed.
But then, for me the last two pages or so spoilt my pleasure of reading. I won`t tell you the end, but I like books where there is at least one good person and where justice is done. The final twist is so weird and unnecessary. Just overkill in my eyes.
So unfortunately I won`t read another book of Donato Carrisi because I fear they all end in a twist that I couldn`t understand and wouldn`t like. It is like eating a sweat with a bitter core. You have to spit it out. You don`t want any more.

Disappointed with the end
