The Gateless Gate is a classic Zen koan collection compiled by Mumon Ekai. It presents 48 short koans, or paradoxical encounters, drawn from exchanges between Zen masters and students. After each case, Mumon Ekai adds his own commentary and verse.
The book is not meant to teach Zen through straightforward explanation. Instead, it challenges the listener to move beyond ordinary logic and intellectual analysis.
