À propos de ce contenu audio

Young, wealthy Arabella is obsessed with French romances: brought up by a reclusive widowed father in an isolated castle, she has educated herself through their pages, and been led to believe that their dramas and absurdities are reality. She blindly adheres to their example and interprets her everyday life through their lens, thinking that life consists of uncontrollable passions and murderous violence, and that any man would die for her. Thus she embarks on a series of hilarious misadventures, insistent on the reality of her imaginary world, like Don Quixote before her.

Lennox's novel is incredibly well-written and very witty ! I enjoyed every minute of the reading, except for Arabella's behavior.

Enough with Arabella

This book is so much more profound and rich than one might think. For those who seek to reexamine the Don Quixote novel-myth— yes, I would say the novel is part of a whole myth about being the co-called first novel and poking fun at medieval "romances"— but it really goes much deeper than that. For anyone who might try and read another level into this novel and what is actually made fun of and what values are actually praised, one can see that under the guise of the famous romance-mockery, the author is actually mocking the soulless and guileless minds and hearts of her times. It is quite astonishing that it was part of the French competitive exam (Agrégation in English) book list in 2024-2025 as that exam really values streamlined thinking and writing and this book (as the other books on the list) value personal experience and the path toward self-knowledge and steadfastness.
