    Description

The Bourne Identity meets Minority Report in this first highly anticipated installment in number-one New York Times best-selling author Kim Harrison's sexy new romantic suspense trilogy, featuring a brilliant special task agent at the top of her field and set in a futuristic Detroit.

During a routine but dangerous Opti task, Peri Reed finds out her trusted partner has made her a corrupt agent. Her unique ability to jump back 40 seconds in time to correct a mistake leaves her vulnerable when her partner, who is responsible for replacing her memory of the event, gives her a false one. But Peri lives and dies on her intuition, and she begins to piece her twisted reality together as she flees her one-time secure situation at Opti and tries to find the truth with a sullen but talented psychologist named Silas who works for the very agency trying to bring the Opti corruption to light.

With Howard, tech and med specialist, and Taf, gun-toting daughter of the opposing grass-roots agency, Silas and Peri try to rebuild her memory of the night she killed her partner, knowing it will put her mental stability in danger. Peri remembers, and thoughts of revenge keep her alive and moving forward as she tries to put an end to Opti, working with the very faction that wants to see her dead.

Not as good as I expected...

I have a huge love for the Hallows and the universe surrounding it. So, I had high expectations for The Drafter as well, seeing how much I love Kim Harrison's writinh and Rachel Morgan.

I found this book tedious. I was waiting the entire time for some ephiphany from Peri to lead us into some place new and awesome. Instead I found that she got stuck and was lost in her own head over and over and over again. Same scene, different guy over and over.

I still think Peri has potential in the hands of Kim Harrison. I just wish the story had really gone somewhere and not just stalled out and gotten stuck.

    I'm so glad it's over

I love Kim Harrison. There hasn't been a book I've read of hers that I haven't enjoyed. And there is a first time for everything. I really hated the character of Perry. The story kept repeating backwards in time, like Ground Hog Day, and it really made me feel as if there was no progression in the story. It drug on and on. And the never ending internal dialogue of the continuously clueless (and kind of whiney) Perry made me grit my teeth. There's not as much dialogue in this story as there is explaining what is happening by the 3rd party narrator. I didn't like Perry, so I could care less what was constantly on her mind. The other characters in the book were not developed very well. I know that the Author writes some great stories and I will continue to read her work. This story just wasn't my cup of tea.

    Gah!!

I'm a major Kim Harrison fan and I miss Rachel Morgan more than I can say. It pains me to write this review.

The problem with writing from Peri's perspective is that the book starts over every single time her memory gets re-written. No doubt the story continues to progress behind the scens with Silas, Allen, Taff, Bill, etc. but we don't get to hear about that. I was so sick of hearing her say, "I won't forget this," and then in the next chapter - you guessed it - Peri forgets! The book goes in a never-ending circle of discovering Omni's betrayal, escaping, being caught, and forgetting, to start all over again.

Peri whines quite a lot and gets carried, drugged, cajoled, taken shopping and comforted far more than I would like. There is an endless supply of panel vans. Everyone tells Peri how awesome she is. We meet no other drafters so this may indeed be true.

January LaVoy is as wonderful as Peri is supposed to be. Her characters are varied and natural and she brings a lot of life to an otherwise disappointing book.

I think the book would be really good if Ms. Harrison wrote it from the perspective of one of the other characters and treated Peri like the chess piece she is. Silas, or even Allen, have the continuity of story and the continued management of Peri's growing awareness that would make for a suspenseful story with a beginning, middle and end.

Until she makes that change, don't waste your credit.

    Interesting

*** Possible Spoilers*** I love the characters, the plot like is very good but Zi am just wondering hoe I am going to adapt to the shift from Urban Fantasy to Futuristic Urban science fiction. I'm not complaining just yet. I already care about the people involved in this twisted struggle but it is a giant leap from magic to tech. I certainly don't mean to discourage anyone from picking this book up it is very well done! This is just my personal hang-up. I am hoping to work through it because I want to see Silas and Peri find the love that they were both too afraid to share! One thing I was truly hoping for was more interactions with Carnac! He seems very important yet he was just relegated to the role of a cat. IS he a psychic cat? Does he have some tech way of communicating with Peri! L

    Just WOW!!!

What made the experience of listening to The Drafter the most enjoyable?

I really enjoy Kim Harrison's work, but this was her best by far! The character development was fantastic!!! And January LaVoy really brought the characters to life. I cannot wait for the next book. I just couldn't put it down, I listened straight through.

What did you like best about this story?

    the character development.

Have you listened to any of January LaVoy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not,but she is now added to my list of favorites.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    I did!

    Any additional comments?

    Just fantastic!

Was hoping for better, but it's okay

I am a huge fan of Harrison's The Hollows, but admit the last 2-3 in that series became tiring. Therefore, I was looking forward to a new series from her.

Maybe if I was more in to the time travel thing, it would have been better but those sequences left me with a headache. The good and bad sides, what they do, and even the idea of a drafter, never entirely made sense to me. Why drafters are important to the whole complicated but loosely defined conspiracy plot, I don't know? What and why did I miss this?

The saving graces were the side characters. Although they didn't have as much humor as the secondary characters in the Hollows, they did offer some interesting and fun distraction. January LaVoy also did a lot to save the read. Bummed I may not pick up book 2.

    Minute by minute...details.

If you could sum up The Drafter in three words, what would they be?

    Story in details

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Drafter?

Following current, past relationships. Perhaps that is past and current...

What about January LaVoy’s performance did you like?

I enjoy January LeVoy's narration. She emphasizes phrases to the degree that the listener is engaged. However, she doesn't inject her interpretations to the point that the listener doesn't feel free to draw their own conclusions.

    Any additional comments?

This book is time travel in a non traditional way. Many possibilities are presented in Book 1. I can envision a series with The Drafter being a solid beginning.
My humble opinion, if you don't enjoy books that are detailed, this book is not for you.

Didn't Think I Would Like It, But I Did !

Would you consider the audio edition of The Drafter to be better than the print version?

I enjoy the audio versions of most books better as I listen to the story while falling asleep. I enjoyed the narrator of this series very much.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Drafter?

As with all Kim Harrison's work I enjoy her ability to completely shake up the plot line. The most memorable moments for me were the complete plot shifts.

Have you listened to any of January LaVoy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don't believe that I have heard Ms. LaVoy's work, I really enjoyed this narration.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction. I was surprised at how entertaining the story was. I had read reviews of fellow Hallows fans that did not like the series. So I was dubious but found myself really liking the new heroine.

    Any additional comments?

Being a Hallows fan, I found it difficult to shift gears for the Peri Reed series. As I read reviews for this serious I believe that I was not alone. Sometimes, we have to step away for a series and read something else then come back to our beloved authors to appreciate their newer incarnations. I will be reading all of the Peri Reed Chronicles in future.

    Okay Read

Must say that even after reading the pre-quel novella Sideswiped I still found it hard to follow the story at first. It did clarify toward the middle a bit but still felt the story was a bit muddled. Hopefully with this one as ground work when book two of this series is released it will be easier to follow the story. Besides this must say that January LaVoy did a fantastic job narrating this story.

    I loved it!

Let me start by saying, that I would read anything Kim Harrison writes. She is one of my favorite writers, and with this book I was not disappointed! This story is exciting, fast paced and heartbreaking. Perri is such a complex character. On one hand she's independent, strong and can hold her own in a fight, even when she's out numbered. Plus, if she gets fatally wounded, she can draft, or go back in time 30-45 seconds and prevent being killed. The only problem is when she goes back in time she only has seconds before she forgets both getting fatally wounded and the draft in which she avoided it. That's not all, she may loose days, months or even years making those in the know in a perfect place to make her believe anything they want her to. They can even purposely take time away, so if she catches on to them, they can just scrub her back to before she found out. This makes her incredibly vulnerable and unable to believe her own mind. Still, Perri has a job to do and it is worth it all since she works for the greater good. Or does she? What if she can't tell who is the villain, or if she is a good guy or a monster?
January LaVoy does a wonderful job narrating this story. She was a new narrator to me, and I am very happy with her performance. I very highly recommend this book!
    Happy reading!

    Not the heroine you expected...

many fans of Kim Harrison seem to hate this book because Peri is no Rachel.
This Book ist not about being strong, it's not about heroes and not even about organisations. This ist a utopic-distopic study of society and hunankibd.
Accept that and you will have an amusing, exciting read.
Accept it is highbrow and have fun on a higher level
