It was awarded the 2004 Orange Prize for Fiction, the 2004 Whitbread Book of the Year Award, and the 2005 Commonwealth Writers Prize. It is 1948, and England is recovering from a war. Histoire
Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this spellbinding novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby. Sethe, its protagonist, was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but 18 years later she is still not free. She has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe's new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved.

The Republic of Gilead offers Offred only one function: to breed. If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire - neither Offred's nor that of the two men on which her future hangs. Brilliantly conceived and executed, this powerful evocation of 21st-century America gives full rein to Margaret Atwood's devastating irony, wit and astute perception.

It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Boisterous, ribald, and ultimately shattering, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has left an indelible mark on the literature of our time. The Age of Surveillance Capitalism is neither a hand-wringing narrative of danger and decline nor a digital fairy tale. Rather, it offers a deeply reasoned and evocative examination of the contests over the next chapter of capitalism that will decide the meaning of information civilization in the 21st century. The stark issue at hand is whether we will be the masters of information and machines or its slaves.

True for today
I loved this book!
We are all caught in the web of technology and this book actually points out various pitfalls to avoid.
Basic truths that you may want to forget is highlighted and you actually think about it and how it not only influences the characters in the story but also impacts on your own life.
A definite must listen/read

Alles in Allem also alles andere als empfehlenswert.

Scared boomer
It couldn't be more clear that the author really hates his main character, and assumes that his readers are all very stupid sheeple and need to be hit into the face with the truth. We are all as brainwashed as boring, plain, and one dimensional Mae, but thank god we get to have Dave Eggers awaken us all. The sex scenes couldn't be more of an old man's horny fantasy, this becomes especially clear since the book is being read by a male voice. Scared boomer fiction at its finest!

Interesting but tedious
The book has interesting ideas, but it is tedious to listen to. It advocates the right for anonymity and privacy, the right to be forgotten, but it is not explicit enough. It could have made the problems of having no privacy more explicit. It only hints at mobbing problems and is not as colorful as it could be about a mob that does not care to know / understand the full story of a person amd that prematurely judges people. Also, it did not sufficiently stretch that the Circle itself had a need for privacy. The protagonist seemed to stupid to make that connection. In the end, the story is told in a very tedious way, and I found it hard to listen to the end.

Unfassbar nervige Protagonistin

Disappointing
I can't get over having a male voice for a female narrator. The entire time he's having to do high pitched voices, and doesn't seem to understand the female banter. And it's even stranger for intimate scenes.
The premise of the story is interesting but I was hoping for an action-thriller turn around that never came.
