Detective Jane Munro must investigate her own past in a riveting true crime–inspired novel by Loreth Anne White, the award-winning author of The Maid’s Diary.
On a crisp June night, a powerful explosion rips through the chic Yaletown area of Vancouver, killing a top prosecutor. Before dawn, cold case detective Jane Munro—on an extended leave of absence—gets a call from a city detective asking for help identifying a partially burned body found in another part of town.
Still reeling from complex grief surrounding the disappearance of her fiancé, Matt, Jane visits the morgue and makes a horrifying discovery. One that changes everything: The body may hold clues to what happened to the man she loves.
Jane’s ensuing off-the-books investigation plunges her into the darkest chapter of her life as the two seemingly disparate cases—the assassination of the prosecutor and her deeply personal hunt for her missing fiancé—converge with another long unsolved mystery: Women have been disappearing along a highway that stretches from the US border to the Yukon for decades.
To uncover the truth, Jane will need to dig deeper than she ever imagined, and confront the possibility that those closest to her—even fellow cops—may be hiding the deadliest secrets of all.
