Private investigator Riley Sullivan uncovers the smuggling of opium into the Port of San Francisco in this 1933 historical mystery/suspense thriller. He's hired by a lawyer for the San Francisco Port Authority to investigate the heist of a delivery to Madame Dalyu Wu, owner of an art galley in Chinatown. Riley becomes quickly involved in an international opium smuggling ring. His assistant in this endeavor is Gina Gallo an agent and sharpshooter with the Bureau of Narcotics. His main squeeze is Amy Morgan who keeps him on “probation” much of the time suspecting he is having other, more clandestine, liaisons. Mellificent McNally, an old and recurring flame, and a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner, is another key player.

"This is an adventure that has plenty of close shaves and gunplay, but the most entertaining elements of the novel are its colorful characters.” - Kirkus Reviews
