At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends who come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous, physical work, and the men take care of the children.

Description
Shortlisted for Audiobook of the Year - The British Book Awards 2020
Moving, powerful, compassionate and beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. Told with deceptive simplicity, it is the kind of book that reminds us of the power of storytelling.
In the midst of war, he found love.
In the midst of darkness, he found courage.
In the midst of tragedy, he found hope.
Nuri is a beekeeper, his wife, Afra, an artist. They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo - until the unthinkable happens. When all they care for is destroyed by war, they are forced to escape. But what Afra has seen is so terrible she has gone blind, and so they must embark on a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece towards an uncertain future in Britain. On the way, Nuri is sustained by the knowledge that waiting for them is Mustafa, his cousin and business partner, who has started an apiary and is teaching fellow refugees in Yorkshire to keep bees.
As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss but dangers that would overwhelm the bravest of souls. Above all - and perhaps this is the hardest thing they face - they must journey to find each other again.
Commentaires
"This is a novel of international significance. Courageous, provocative, haunting, it will open our eyes." (Heather Morris, author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz)

Tears in the rain
As I walked in storm Denis I was not sure whether it was tears or rain falling down my face. Such horrors amid such beauty, I can never consider refugees in the same way again. Behind each lies a life lost and maybe a little hope.

Excellent novel
What a moving, heart-wrenching story! Artfully interweaving the past and the present, it kept me enthralled the whole way through. The narrator read beautifully, bringing the characters and the story to life. I highly recommend this book; it will help you to appreciate the terrible experiences refugees face on their quest for a better life.

A moving story
just finished reading this book. It was a journey that opened my eyes once again to the harsh reality of war and what comes with it. This book is moving and heart breaking but has those little moments that sun shines and hope appears or those beautiful details grabs attention. However, these can not compensate for the darkness and bitterness of what is happening to these people. One can not imagine a human being could survive under so much pressure or what will be left of him / her after losing everything in life.
I found that majority of those calm moments for Nouri was the moments he spent with his wife or thinks about bees. Those details he was describing about the smells, sounds, textures and....
at first I wanted to criticize the writer because of repetitive pattern of this descriptions and details about Afra and Bees. what seems to be the only nice things Nouri can think of. But then I noticed these are actually the only things left in the poor guys life that create those beautiful moments for him throughout the journey.
The book sometimes reminded me of one of Romain Gary books and I think had the same narrative style.

Liebe ist einfach staerker als alles andere
Ein tolles Buch, das auf eine wunderbare Art die Tragik der syrischen Fluechtlinge schildert und gleichzeitig zeigt, wozu wahre Liebe imstande ist. Sehr empfehlenswert
