Number-one best-seller John Grisham returns with his most suspenseful thriller yet. Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of the USA only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett just became number five. I did not know Judge Fawcett, but I know who killed him, and why. I am a lawyer, and I am in prison. It's a long story.

Histoire
Amos Decker is a former professional football player whose career was ended by a terrible hit. Now a police detective, Amos is still haunted by a side effect from the accident he can never forget. One night Decker comes home from a stakeout to find his wife, young daughter, and brother-in-law horrifically murdered. Obviously scarred and nearly broken, Decker has to use his skills as a detective and his unusual brain capacity to try to catch the monster who killed his family.
Description
One night that secret catches up with him in the form of some bad men in a dark alley -- they have a deeply compromising video of the incident that haunts him. The men make it clear to Kyle that he no longer owns his own future -- that he must do as they tell him, or the video will be made public knowledge, with all the unpleasant consequences.
What price do they demand for Kyle's secret? Strangely, it is for Kyle to do exactly what any ambitious young lawyer would want to do: take a job in New York as an associate at the largest law firm in the world, a job that is incredibly well paid and, with mammoth hours and outrageous billing, could lead to partnership and a fortune.
But Kyle won't be working for the company, but against it - passing on the secrets of the company's biggest trial to date, a dispute between two defense contractors worth billions of dollars to the victor. Now Kyle is caught between the criminal forces manipulating him and the FBI, who would love to unmask the conspiracy. Will his intellect, cunning, and bravery be enough to extricate him from an impossible dilemma?
Full of twists and turns and reminiscent of The Firm, The Associate is vintage John Grisham

Ordinary
Having read all of John Grisham books I looked forward with anticipation to listening to one. What a light weight book this is. It would seem that maybe John Grisham is turning out too many books and is turning simple ideas into long drawn out melodramas.
Don't bother.

Disappointing overall
Whilst this story has an interesting premise, and I understand based on an idea from an actual case, this was very disappointing overall for me. This was my first abridged audiobook, and my initial reaction when I finished was that 'abridged' means removing the ending! The story finishes so abruptly without any form of resolution and numerous 'loose ends' just kept open.

First JG in many years
I thoroughly enjoyed it, although the end is left a little too open for my taste.
Another hour or two to tie things up would have made it 5*
Enjoy

Okay I guess
I was expecting a book as good as "The Appeal" but this one let me down, especially from the fact that there was no moral to the story that I could understand. It felt just like a bunch of events happening and then it was over. I did like some of the personalities in the book though.
