Description

Lisa Edwards, top London magazine editor, has been fantasizing about promotion to New York. Instead, she's asked to launch a new women's magazine in Dublin. She thinks nothing could be worse - until she meets her new staff. They're friendly, helpful, and enthusiastic - in other words, they wouldn't last two minutes in London!

As Lisa struggles to find her feet in this alien world of no back-stabbing or bitchiness, her neurotic assistant, Ashling, is also in trouble. She's just too nice for journalism, and it shows. Who better to help them both than their handsome-but-hassled boss, Jack Devine? Always allowing for the fact that his moodiness could give Heathcliff a run for his money, of course.

Not Up to Par for this Author

I am a huge fane of Sophie Kinsella/Marian Keyes/Madeline Wickham and this just didn't do it for me. Out of the 18 hours of audio, I think only 4 or 5 were enjoyable. At the end it came together and there were some moments of humor and memorable quotes, but this was really disappointing. I gave it three stars because of the last few hours that were what I am accustome to with this author. Skip this and listen to Remember me or any Susan Elizabeth Phillips or Susn Mallery book.

A good 'Chill Out" listen

A great chickflit novel. Nothing to serious and mindbogling, but a good listen to chill out for awhile. Everyone can identify with at least one of the characters in this. It does twist and turn a bit and you think it's going to turn out one way, and then the author takes you in another direction. I found the book on a whole entertaining, and at times just had to listen for just 5 more minutes to see what happens next.

Terrible accents

Would you try another book from Marian Keyes and/or Juanita McMahon?

Yes by the author, no by the narrator. The horrific attempt at mimicking the Irish accent is very close to insulting and makes listening really, really hard. It ruined the entire experience.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Juanita McMahon?

The narrator has a pleasant voice and is great to listen to when narrating in her own accent. Unfortunately, her "Irish" accent is unbearable.

Any additional comments?

Please choose narrators more carefully, or just let them narrate in their own accents!!

Thoroughly Enjoyable!!

Super book. Funny, engaging, entertaining, well written and very well narrated. Some have commented on poorly done American accents, the American accents are only at the beginning and very end of the book, too minuet to bother! Best book I've chosen in a long time! Great author and narrator.

Maybe not for everybody

This was the very first Marian Keyes novel that crossed my path and I enjoyed it. It was a story I really identified with and still do. The 4 main girls are maybe sort of stereotypical but I still found them interesting enough to want to know more. Perhaps the ending feels a bit rushed but still wrapped up the story nicely.I cannot say which part I liked best because I would spoil it but it was satisfying.

The story is well written and not overly complicated. Something that is easy to get into. I can only recommend. I guess it is chick-lit even though I find that category somewhat lackluster - it's about modern women in their 30s about love, life and work.

What a struggle to keep on reading

Would you try another book from Marian Keyes and/or Juanita McMahon?

I will in hope that it is better, as I have others that love Marian Keyes.

What do you think your next listen will be?

This Charming Man, as I have just downloaded it

Would you listen to another book narrated by Juanita McMahon?

Yes, the narrator wasn't too bad but the story was dry so hard to judge

Could you see Sushi for Beginners being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

if it is shortened then perhaps

Great little get away

This is a good book, the characters and story line keep you entertained. It throws some twists in, but it is quite predictable. I knew what was going to happen to everyone by the end of the book long before I was through. But it's a fun listen and has some good laughs as well as some good life lessons. Brings attention to some serious issues by the end that I didn't expect.

good story , bad performance

I got this version of a book because of narrator's pleasant voice in a sample. Don't know what happened to her during any dialog. Can't judge accent but why all 20-something year old women sound like drunken sailors except for Lisa and why men , even the ones who are very manly according to a story all sound like elderly women ? Very , very destructive and I think it hurts the story. I almost want to buy a book just so I can read it myself without listening to the voice. I like the story though. This is my first book by this author and I am looking forward to discovering more of her books.

Concluded in a clunky haphazard romcom fashion.

Ending seems disconnected with the story.
Kept waiting for the point if the book. Just fizzled out. Out odd one out of the rest.of Keyes books.
