Simply Wonderful!
I sit here sobbing, my heart hurting and filled with joy for Avery & Alena at the same time. I have to start by saying that with the exception of the rating with stars at the end of books, (I mean, who would care what I think of a book... Right?) I have never left a review of a book. But I have never felt so compelled to do so as right now.
I do tend to "love" almost all the books in this genre after I've finished them. But this book is BY FAR the best I've read by Georgia Beers! Idk if it was the fact that she narrated it herself or not, (which I do prefer to hear books read by the author ... Stories seem to have that, idk... lil somethin extra that you don't get when it's not read by the one who wrote it. Even the best of performers) but I have read/listened to all of Ms. Beers novels on Audible thus far & this book is...really wonderful.
Georgia Beers writes & in this case narrates in such a way that I felt I was IN the story. Maybe its how she creates real life characters with everyday conflicts & combine that with a storyline that you don't necessarily see coming a mile away, which can be difficult in this genre at times.
In my opinion this the BEST novel I've read so far by Georgia Beers, & I said that same thing last week when I finished "Olive Oil & White Bread."
:-D

Better than expected
At first, I was hesitant, but I like other Georgia Beers books so I gave it a shot. The narrating was different than I'm used to, and I almost stopped listening because of it. Once I accepted that just because the narration was different than I was used to, it didn't mean it was bad. In fact, it was great and I was so caught up with the characters that I found myself laughing and crying with them. The ending was bitter sweet, but felt very real. This was the most realistic love story in this genre that I've ever read.

Probably enjoyable if parenting interests you!
If you could sum up Starting From Scratch in three words, what would they be?
Children, parenting, tee-ball (and a small portion of lesbian romance)
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have focused more on the romance part. The plot deals mostly with parenting issues and with kids in various forms. I don't have much interest in parenting or kids and find this book kinda dull.
If you could rename Starting From Scratch, what would you call it?
Dating a woman with a kid
Any additional comments?
I have read both "Too Close to Touch" and "96 hours" which are great books. If you are as disinterested in parenting as me you should read those instead. If parenting interests you I think you'll like this book.

Narration hindered the story
The story was neat, characters pretty interesting, but the narration was very choppy. . No offense to the author, but maybe she should stick to writing and let the voice talent do the reading. It may have been a money saving measure, but it was nearly a story killing measure.

great book, read by author not amazing
dont get me wrong. this book is fun and exciti g and well paced. the characters had me invested. i laughed and cried. love the story just wish it had been longer.
my only real issue with the audio book is that it was read by someone whose reading drew attention to itself. she actually did a great job. she told the story well and didnt detract from it. but there is a reason voice actors do this stuff. they are really good at it and ms beers you are a great writer. i love your books. you really did a good job and delivered well. i just enjoy them more when its not you reading them. the pacing seemed off and the reading drew attention to itself so much it was distracting.

Nice happy story
I like the overall story and thought they pick trail of a lesbian relationship was accurate. The intimate scenes were tasteful. But I had a problem listening to the author. I didn't care for the way it was narrated.

Vintage Lesbian Fiction
Read by the author this is a pretty good love story albeit with some kinda lame segments and people that acted like no one I know. The main character Avery was okay even if her relationship with her friend Maddie was more than a little sitcom city. Maddie; a meddling busybody steps way over the line with her and Avery's reaction is totally tepid. Her love interest Elena is a really good depictment of an ultimate love interest until the end of the book when she; Spoiler Alert Here; breaks up with Avery over something Avery's ex said. I don't know about older lesbians but my friends and I agree we'd never even start a fight with our girl much less break up because of something her ex told us. Women are much better in a full relationship than guys; which is why a lot of us who have the choice, go long term XX; short term XY. Anyway when things get all turned around a chick can be way more vindictive than a dude; or at least a lot better at it. Then to go off on your girl and not even give her an opportunity to respond is way stupid. The story ends nicely of course; it is a love story after all. Great read/listen if you enjoy the genre even if somewhat lacking in realism. Almost forgot; she isn't all that bad but the author should stick to writing.

Beers captures the reader
This book is one of my favorites of Georgia Beers. It's a treat to enjoy the audio version because she's narrating.
