Description
In this evocative and gorgeously wrought memoir reminiscent of Rob Sheffield's Love Is a Mixtape and George Hodgman's Bettyville, Michael Ausiello - a respected TV columnist and founder and editor in chief of TVLine.com - remembers his late husband and the lessons, love, and laughter that they shared throughout their 14 years together.
For the past decade, TV fans of all stripes have counted upon Michael Ausiello's insider knowledge to get the scoop on their favorite shows and stars. From his time at Soaps in Depth to his influential stints at TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly to his current role as founder and editor in chief of the wildly popular website TVLine.com, Michael has established himself as the go-to expert when it comes to our most popular form of entertainment.
What many of his fans don't know, however, is that while his professional life was in full swing, Michael had to endure the greatest of personal tragedies: His husband, Kit Cowan, was diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive form of neuroendocrine cancer. Over the course of 11 months, Kit and Michael did their best to combat the deadly disease, but Kit succumbed to his illness in February 2015.
In this heartbreaking and darkly hilarious memoir, Michael tells the story of his harrowing and challenging last year with Kit while revisiting the 13 years that preceded it and how the undeniably powerful bond between him and Kit carried them through all manner of difficulty - always with laughter front and center in their relationship. Instead of a tale of sadness and loss, Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies is an unforgettable, inspiring, and beautiful testament to the resilience and strength of true love.

Gritty heartbreaking story of love and grief.
I enjoyed the raw honesty of author. Story narrated by author. You can hear that power of his emotion through his speech.

Spoiler Alert: A Hero Lives, Too
I’ve read Michael Ausiello’s television columns for close to twenty years, so when he first went public with his husband Kit Cowan’s cancer struggle, it was a very personal, very rare and very shocking aspect to learn about his life. So when Michael announced that he had written a book about their fight, I knew it was something that I had to read. This book is equal parts irreverent, vulnerable, funny, heartbreaking, uplifting and gripping. Michael does not shy away for any aspect: from his own childhood insecurities, to the ups and downs of their personal relationship, to the harrowing details of fighting cancer. His ability to tell such an engaging story cannot be under estimated. I am so glad that I chose to listen to this book read by Michael himself. It was like listening to an old friend. One may think that the title gives away the ending, but even I was surprised by the beautiful conclusion.

Raw, Intimate, Heartbreaking, and Amazing
There are certain books that benefit from being experienced via audio, and "Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies" is one of them. This memoir from Michael Ausiello about the up and downs of his 13 year relationship with his partner (and later, husband) Kit, contrasted with Kit's losing battle to cancer, is incredibly intimate, raw, beautiful, heartbreaking, and honest. I mistakenly listened during a long drive, and I laughed, cried, and experienced about every emotion possible. Hearing Michael's voice brought an entirely new level to the experience as he imbued every sentence with love, joy, sadness, loss, compassion, and empathy. I feel privileged to have listened to such a beautiful piece of work. Highly recommend, but beware the tears.

Read synopsis first
I had heard so many people talk about how good this book is that I just bought it and started reading. Spoiler!! I wasn’t expecting it to be a gay love story where one is destroyed by cancer within a year far too young. I know, the title should have given some of that away. I thought it was a tongue-in-cheek title. It was a beautiful love story and very well written, I just wasn’t ready for a tear-jerker. The last chapter was a little weird and confusing. I typically love when the author reads the book to hear it in the intended inflection, but he was very monotone in the first half and kept putting me to sleep. I did enjoy him reading the eulogy and found it emotional. Good book, but you have to be in the mood for a sad read.

A moving love story
I enjoyed listening to Michael tell his story; the love story involving Kit & Mike! I was widowed at exactly the same age and understand the need to share one’s story! That said, I don’t understand the last chapter, at all…I think I missed something, or perhaps Michael continues to fantasize about the life he’ll never have! I certainly understand that!

One of the best love stories
Real. Gut wrenching. Funny. Sad. I felt like I was right there with Mike and Kit as their love story unfolded and then heartbreakingly ended. Seriously one of the best books I have ever listened to.

I adored this book. I feel like I have a bird's eye view of Michael and Kit's love story. It was hilarious, devastating, heavy and breezy.
