Agatha is always fun!

So this Agatha Christie book is based on a play she wrote. It has all the standard ingredients--country house, wealthy people and their servants and a perplexing murder to be solved. What is missing--is any of the usual detectives we expect (Poirot, Miss Marple, Tommy & Tuppence, etc).

However, this is still a very good book. The detectives she employs in this play/book (a local man and his constable) have much the flavor of the more well-known characters she created, so nothing at all suffered from that. What possibly did (in a very tiny way) was that this has been written in a style that suggests some things I do not believe Agatha would have said (she didn't say "sucks" nor hint at sexual things--one small reference that seemed uncharacteristic of her). The story did not suffer at all because of those things. In fact, since all of it takes place in one room--it was easy to visualize it being acted on stage--something I rather enjoyed.

Here is what is really great about this book: Hugh Fraser, who always reads her books very well, is exceptionally good with the voices and the reading of this one. I have heard several by him that I thought were just "so-so," but he outdid himself narrating this one! If you love Christie, this is a very good listen.

Wonderfully adapted from the play!

As all Agatha Christie, the story itself was wonderful fun with fantastic characters. An adaptation of a play is not always successful, but this certainly was. Hugh Fraser was his usual joy to listen to. In all ways, a totally enjoyable listening experience.

Proper period adaptation

I could listen to Hugh Frasier all day long. He's an excellent performer, but I'm sure no one needs me to point out that.

The story is, of course, vintage Christie. It's wonderful to be able to hear a new one after all this time. The only quibble I have is a seeming anachronism on the part of Pippa. "Sucks" seems out of place. Otherwise, a definite spider's web.

lightweight Christie

This review was mistakenly posted elsewhere (for The Clocks), but it correctly applies to Spider's Web: "This is a particularly lightweight mystery, pleasant but not really interesting or compelling. Hugh Fraser narrated it well, however, and I won't hesitate to download another book with him as a reader."

Deja Vu

I thought I hadn't read this Agatha Christie, and I neglected to fully read the little "cover" provided by Audible, which uses the word "novelization".

So, early on, I started to get a feeling that I knew this, but differently. Turns out I have seen this as a play. It's a lovely piece - full of humor and nearly-slapstick "where's the body?" action.

It's also good as a book. With the great Hugh Fraser narrating, Agatha Christie's Audible offers are always a bargain.

If you like this, try to find the play and see it, as well. The play is a hoot; Mr Fraser saves this slightly less sprightly version.

Pretty good

Pretty good story. I'd read more by this author. Only thing I didn't like was that the author used a clever "solution" to one of the mysteries of the story that Christie had used in another of her novels.

Classic Agatha Christie

Classic Agatha Christie, I loved every moment of it and did my usual bit of guessing twelve possible endings and none of them being correct. Beautifully read.
