Description

In this thrilling new Night Rebel series set in New York Times best-selling author Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress world, sexy and ruthless vampire Ian finally meets his match!

The rule breaker...

Master vampire Ian is unrepentant, shameless...and every shade of wicked. He’s made one too many enemies in his two centuries of existence, including Dagon, a demon who now lays claim to his soul. Ian’s only chance to escape Dagon is to join forces with a Law Guardian, but he's never been able to abide by the rules for long.

The lawmaker...

Veritas’ normal role is police, judge, and jury to reprobates like Ian. But she has her own ax to grind with Dagon, so if she can use Ian as bait...well, all’s fair in law and war. As they scour supernatural hot spots to perfect their trap, Veritas soon realizes Ian’s carefully cultivated devil-may-care roguish image hides something much more powerful. And Ian discovers Veritas has shocking secrets of her own.

As they’re drawn to each other with a passion as intense as their peril, either love or justice will prevail. But each will have devastating consequences.

<br />Listened to over 390 books/never left a review:

I love... LOVE... supernatural adult books. I've listened/read so many. I've listened to all of Frost's other books and thought I couldn't enjoy anything as much... but oh my **** this is the unbelievable, most necessary paranormal romance novel that must be listened to ever. Literally, my first review of over 390+ books and I don't even want to write anything other than, READ THIS/LISTEN TO THIS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT NOW. Frost.... there are no words... narrator, at first her voice takes 5 or so chapters to get used to and then you love it.... LOVE.

Stop reading this review, stop listening to all other books that come before this... STOP YOUR DAY JOB... and for everything possible listen to this book.

I realize this review means nothing to those that don't know me, but please believe me, this is amazing.... so much so that I refuse to listen to the last 25 minutes of this book!

WHAT!? You may say: What is she thinking?
And I have never done this...
But I don't even want to know if this book ends on a cliff hangar; I'm just stopping now. In order to enjoy these characters, story, plot... it all!

FROST: You have outdone yourself!

1000% worth the wait!

‪It’s 5:30am and I just finished this book.
wow, just wow!
This book was worth the wait! I couldn’t put it down since I picked it back up at 11:00pm last night! The finale battle scene had me shocked, sad, happy, just full of emotions. Jeanine knows how to keep her readers on edge and wanting more. I can not wait to read the next book in this series.

Another book I can continue reading over and over through the years. Thank you for being so amazing at what you do. Keep these books coming!

Dreadful accent.

I understand that Veritas is very old. But Ian comments that once in a while he catches a hint of an accent or an antiquated word choice. That would be great. But the accent Ms Gilbert is using is so thick and unnatural that it changes the way she uses her voice, all in a higher pitch. Between the accent and the pitch, emotion is getting lost. It feels like it's all on the same level. Her interaction with Ian is flat. I was excited for this book, pre-ordered it in fact. I'm about a third of the way through and struggling to pay attention because of the reading. I'm stunned because I have all the audiobooks in the related series and I really enjoyed them. I'm currently on Chapter 11 and feeling like nothing much has happened. I hope it gets better. I'll come back and upgrade the review it it does.

I LOVED everything about this!!!!

I have hundreds on audiobooks under my belt and this is the first review I am writing and it is because not only did I absolutely love this novel but I really want to defend Tavia Gilbert’s narration. I have every single installment of Ms. Frost’s series and the spinoffs. I have enjoyed all of them and I really enjoyed Ms. Gilbert’s narration even when some of the voices were a little “off” (ie...the last Night Prince installment, which was my least favorite but still good). However, she does a pretty darn good job of recreating accents on characters that sometimes go years in between being voiced. The criticism of her voicing of Veritas’ voice is absurd for one really important reason - I don’t want to give too much away because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone - but I will say this. To this point the law guardian has been a minor, albeit important, character we see occasionally throughout the series - this is the first book that she plays a lead role. To that end, previously she is voiced as a modern quasi American accented woman but she is over 4000 years old (we know that because it was talked about previously). Her original accent cannot possibly be the way it seemed in previous installments (mind you, none of us can really know what a 4000 year old dialect would sound like but as readers/listeners we should be able to get behind her not sounding “American” when she speaks English, yeah?). Bravo Ms. Gilbert - you drew me into this story from minute one.

On to the story. I absolutely loved it. I loved the direction you went in Ms. Frost. I didn’t realize that this was going to be another series at first and then when I found out I wasn’t sure Ian and Veritas’ could drive another series but I am so attached to them already that it’s going to be incredibly hard to wait for book 2. I have two all time favorite paranormal series I am passionate about and this is one of them. I cannot wait for it to move on. Thank you for creating another branch of this fantastic world you’ve created.

I didn't want it to end

I didn't want it to end.... and it didn't. Shades of Wicked is the first in a series featuring Ian and Veritas... and now we have to wait for the next installment.

The pair has amazing chemistry! The story-line was fast paced, exciting, and sexy. I wondered how Ian's story would work out and was not disappointed. And the cameo appearances of Bones, Cat, and crew just added to the enjoyment.

I loved Tavia Gilbert's narration, including her take on Veritas' accent (what does ancient Sumerian sound like, anyway?). She gave us the sense of a very strong individual with ancient roots.... perfect for Veritas.

So now that I've devoured this volume, I'll say it politely: write quickly, Ms Frost! We're ready for the next one.

A bit disappointed.......

I have followed the Night Huntress series and their spin offs for the last year or so. I was SO excited about Ian’s getting his own story. He was such a trouble maker, but I knew where was more to him. I couldn't wait for this book to drop and now that I have it.......I expected......more. I don’t know, I had a hard time getting into the story line. The narration was on point as usual with Tavia Gilbert (LOVE HER) except when she did Bones’s voice in this book. She changed it and it was very hard to get use to it especially when I liked how she did his voice in the other books. He is a scoundrel....adorably so. (le sigh) But in this book his voice doesn’t match the Bones I absolutely fell in love with. Now I know this is Ian's story, but I was excited to know Bones and Kat were in it. Kat's voice was very much the same and Veritas character????? Yeah, she wasn't what I was expecting and I was thrown to know that her and Ian to hook up. I didn't get the #teamveritasandIan feels. Doesn't click right in my opinion. I don't know....waiting to see what happens in book 2.

Why change the accent????

I love every one of the Night Huntress, NH World and Night Prince novels... And as we all know, Veritas appears in quite a few of them. Why the drastic change in accent for this book? I was so confused in the first chapter, I kept thinking I was listening to a different character because the accent is so different than in the other books. At one point in the first couple chapters, Ian even says something like, "you barely have an accent," and it make me snort. Anyway, good story, like always, but very distracting to change the character's voice and dialect...

Narrators Accent is Annoying But Story worth the annoyance!

I usually love Tavia Gilbert’s narration and she has so much talent, but I hated the main characters accent. It got better in the middle of the book as it didn’t seem quite so thick and by the end there were places where she dropped the accent altogether. This was distracting. The story was entertaining and what I’ve come to expect from Jeaniene Frost.
