Description

Journey with Olympian Ryan Hall as he reflects on the joys and trials of the running life and, along the way, shows you how his faith has helped him win in his workouts, races, and overall mindset.

Ryan Hall is an Olympic athlete and American record holder in the half marathon (59:43). But as a kid, Ryan hated running. He wanted nothing to do with the sport until one day, he felt compelled to run the 15 miles around his neighborhood lake. He was hooked.

Starting that day, Ryan felt a God-given purpose in running. He knew he could, and would, race with the best runners in the world and that his talent was a gift to serve others. These two truths launched Ryan's 20-year athletic career and guided him through epic failures and exceptional breakthroughs to competing at the highest level.

Now a coach, speaker, and nonprofit partner, Ryan shares the powerful faith behind his athletic achievements and the lessons he learned that helped him push past limits, make space for relationships that enrich life on and off the running trails, and cultivate a positive mindset.

Lessons such as:

  • Learning how to focus on your purpose and say no to distractions
  • Select and strive for the right goals - goals for the heart and the body
  • How to deal with defeat and disappointment
  • How to endure immense pain and build resilience
  • Running as if you've already won

Ryan's story is one of encouragement and inspiration for listeners of any age and level of running ability - or none at all. It's a story that shows that you, too, can change your outlook, see God's hand in your life, and run the race that really matters.

Way better than expected.

To be honest, I only bought this book because Ryan Hall wrote it. It was truly a great book. Mostly it is for the Christian Runner, but still a book anyone could love.
My two negatives on the book is that it is very short, and it should have a pdf concurrent reading with it. He has so many passages he references that there is no way to remember all of them. I listen while I run, so no way to write them down for later.

Insightful yet Confusing

As a fan of Ryan Hall, this was a must-read. He has great insights from his faith and running background that were encouraging and helpful, personally and as a runner, myself. However, the book is organized by theme, not chronology, which made certain points in the book frustrating. Often, a story would be told, leading to a climax, but, instead, the story would jump to a related theme, 8 years in the past, but did not really complete the story being told. However, despite those unwelcome interruptions, I enjoyed the book and encourage anyone who is a runner or wants to go to the next level in their life to read it.

Excellent message! Great for anyone (runner or not)!

I could write that it’s just an excellent book, but that’s not true. It’s more than just a book! Runner Ryan shares a deeper message woven throughout this whole story of his and his wife’s life. It’s powerful. I literally didn’t want to stop reading it! Being a runner myself, I could identify with lots of pains and struggles, but also joys and encouragements from this discipline! It’s a beautiful gift to get to run, but even better to experience God through it! This book put into words the journey God takes each of us (whether a runner or not) on in life as we surrender to Him. Thank you Ryan for taking the time to articulate your experience! Please keep writing more! A fellow runner in sharing the Gospel, Rachel

Excellent Book!

This is a solid book!

If you are looking for technical running advice, this book will help your mental game. It will not coach you on exercise physiology....

If you are looking for advice on how to push through hard times in your life (such as running a long distance race or likely many of life's other challenges) then this book will be inspiring.

If you are looking to gain some insight behind the scenes of one of the world's best runners then this book is it.

If you are a person of faith, and a runner, you will enjoy this book. Ryan repeatedly shares his personal experiences about his relationship with God during his running career.

As you might image, I enjoyed all of the above aspects of the book. Ryan, thank you for sharing your story!

Good, but very religious

Good book, and you'll enjoy it if you are very religious. I am not, so the frequent bible references weren't a fit for me.
Positive message, and congrats to Ryan and his wife for all of their success.

Too much bible on it.

All the talk about Jesus will distract you. There are some good running content, but the Jesus and bible talk was too much

Runners devotional

I listened to this expecting a runners memoirs, instead I was pleasantly surprised with a runners devotional. Such an amazing book for Christian runners, no matter what Mile you’re in.

Stories that breathe life into running

I really learned so much from Ryan Hall through his book and it will help to breathe new life into my running as a marathoner and as a husband and father of 5. Ryan has some epic running stories and his growing in his faith through them. Yes, this book will point you to the Gospel of Jesus but that is one of the main purposes I wanted to listen. I want to find ways to connect my running life to Jesus, marriage and parenting and Ryan does that well. This was my first Audible book as I got a gift card and paired Run the Mile You're in with 26 Marathons by Meb which seems to have a similar high level theme. So I can't offer much insight on performance and writing style yet. This book kept me captivated and I started to use some of Ryan's advice and inspiration right away. Yes, he jumps around with some of the same stories but it makes sense because each chapter is a theme and I love that it follows 26 chapters for 26.2 miles of a marathon. I will relisten to this book many times to keep getting more from it. I was blessed to have met Ryan's wife Sara Hall at a road race in Iowa and this story brought me back there knowing she had just come back from Africa and Ryan is her coach. Thank you.
