    Description

Long before the coming of the Imperium, the realm of Ultramar was ruled by Roboute Guilliman, the last Battle King of Macragge. Even after learning of his true heritage as a primarch son of the Emperor of Mankind, he strove to expand his domain as efficiently and benevolently as possible, with the XIII Legion Ultramarines as his alone to command.

Now, facing a rival empire on the ork-held world of Thoas, Guilliman must choose his weapons carefully - otherwise his dream of a brighter future could be lost forever.

    Good

A interesting look at the beginnings of the Codex Astartes and Roboute Guilliam. I wish it covered more than one battle.

    Good book

It is a short audio book but the fighting starts early and stops at the very end of the book. Enjoyed this one a lot.

    Good but ...

I love the ultramarines... chaos players hate them. Even some loyalists don’t like them. Black Library does a magnificent job as is expected. But I must admit with all due respect, my Lord Guilliman is just one big computer.
If you need to learn theoretical vs practical ... this is the book.

    Its not really about Guilliman

Now look, the Ultramarines are my favorite Astartes. But this book really isn't about Guilliman. I learned more about Roboute in the short story 'Illyrium' than I did here. I learned a bit about how the Ultramarines operate. How they have their system of 'Theoreticals' & 'Practicals' for explaining strategy, which helped when I got to books like 'Battle for the Abyss' and 'Know No Fear' One interesting part of the story is an Ultramarine disobeying orders and getting a bunch of his comrades trapped, and its nice to see that the boys in blue aren't as boring as people accuse them of being. The most memorable part of the book by far is a sequence early on where a group of scout marines are surrounded and killed. Its simultaneously very sad while also being a great illustration of just how hard to kill an Astartes is. But again none of this gives us more insight to Robute's character,

they turned a legions protocols into a gimmick.

they beat you over the head with the "theoretical/practical" setup. ends up feeling gimmicky. no real insights into roboute either.

    Good but not great

short and sweet review on a short and serviceable novel.

Big Ultramarine and Roboute Guilliman fan here, was excited to give this a go and while it was a good listen I found myself clocking out at certain points but it was by no means terrible.

    Great Production

As usual, great story brought to life by a great voice actor, Toby Longworth. Looking forward to my next book.
