    Description

Itinerant lawmen Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch return to confront an escaped criminal in the grittiest entry yet of the New York Times best-selling series.

Territorial marshals Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch figured things had finally settled down in Appaloosa when Boston Bill Black's murder charge was dropped. But all that changed when Augustus Noble Driggs was transferred to a stateside penitentiary just across the border from Mexico. Square-jawed, handsome, and built like a muscled thoroughbred stallion, Driggs manages to intimidate everyone inside the prison walls, including the upstart young warden.

In a haunting twist of fate, Driggs and a pack of cold-blooded convicts are suddenly on the loose - and it's up to any and all territorial lawmen, including Cole and Hitch, to capture the fugitives and rescue the woman kidnapped during their escape. But nothing is ever quite what it seems with the ever-elusive Driggs. Finally free, he's quickly on his own furious hunt for a hidden cache of gold and jewels - and for the men who betrayed him and left him for dead.

With an unlikely and unconventional Yankee detective by their side, Cole and Hitch set off on a massive manhunt. As horses' hooves thunder and guns echo deadening reports, Driggs discovers one of the lawmen on his trail is none other than a fellow West Point graduate he'd just as soon see dead. Ruthless and willing to leave a bloody path of destruction in his wake, Driggs seeks vengeance at any cost.

    Narrator

This particular Narrator is by far the level number one best I’ve listened to out of over a couple hundred audiobooks and I’m looking forward to listening to many more in the future, Rex Linn is at the top of the list.
    Great Narrator

    ending was abrupt..

Felt like we got stiffed a few chapters at the end.. Story wraps up way too fast.

    Dammit. Another Mediocre Book

This one wasnt "bad" per se, just not as good as Parker wouldve done. Again though....the narrator is terrible. I wont be purchasing the next one.

    A Western Story

I found this Western novel very interesting . Robert B Parker normally writes in detective fiction and thrillers. I couldn't put this book down and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

    WHY?

I have been and Audible subscriber since 2006. This is only the second review I am writing. Cole and Hitch have been one of my favorite go to westerns since I heard the first book. All I do is listen too books ..... Not music just books. I am not a writer ( as you will see from this review) but I know what I like. This books ruined the series for me. The first and foremost complaint is WHY change narrators? I mean its like changing the lead actor or actress in a movie.... Seriously.

Second I had to check a couple times to make sure I did not hit the .75X button. The reading was just not good. On top of this I could really not even follow the story.

    MORE GORE THAN NECESSARY

I understand that these are shoot um up Westerns and I like the characters and the reader. The reader sounds like an old country cowboy and it works with the Cole and Hitch banter. That is what I enjoy the most. The stories up to now have been good, but in this one there is a bit too much rape, gore, and even a young girl mess that could easily have been left out without loosing the story structure. I get that these were really bad men escaped from prison, running a muck but ..... too much!
Better story would work more than all the gore. I actually stopped reading murder mysteries because some authors concentrate on the twisted mind of the criminal more than the method used by the investigator to corner the suspect. I guess it sells more books? I enjoy the justice part and how they accomplish that.

    a far cry from Appaloosa

because of my career I listen to a lot of audio books. this is book by far is one of the worst I've sat through. I've never written a review before and the only reason I'm writing this one in hopes that Robert Knott sees it and gives up on writing. I loved Robert B. Parkers Appaloosa. and think he should've stopped there. I found the Cole and Hitch books after Appaloosa to be boring, and poorly written. The dialogue... yuck. but when Robert Knott decided to get involved it went to a whole other level of suck. and the narration... I thought Titus Welliver was mono-toned and unable to get context. But Rex Linn makes Welliver sound like David R. Lewis (Btw, if you want to listen to a well written and perfectly narrated western series check out David R Lewis' "The Trail" series). I have listen to all the Cole and Hitch books and I can say after Appaloosa, none of them are great. and the narrators don't help them at all. this last installment however... I couldn't even finish it. Holy cow Mr. Knott. just get on with it. you made an 8 hour book out of a 4 hour story. and the way he wrote it. Robert B Parker told the story of Appaloosa through the eyes of Hitch, and with the exception of the prologue, kept that point of view. Now Robert Knott has the audacity to break into a 3rd person omniptant view that in my option ruins the whole vision of the Cole and Hitch universe. my only hope is that someone reads this and A; doesn't waste time on this trash: and B; tells Robert Knott that he is missing on the brave of a great author and story teller. I'm not a book snob or anything like that. and as I have said, I've never written a review on anything in my life. but Robert Knott got me so worked up over this garbage that I had to say something.

    Cole and Hitch ride again!

Involved tale with a twisting plot, desperados, intrigue and intresting character both old ans new. Knott continues to weave surprisingly complicated but fast moving yarns taking this series to another level.
