Description
This is not the story of a hero. So begins the story of one of the most distinctive heroes you'll ever meet. Drafted into a war he barely comprehends with no taste for combat, Pup will find himself thrust into the very center of the conflict. How he affects that conflict, and how this changes him and everyone around him, is the soul of this utterly unique war story.

awesome book!
What did you love best about Pup?
His sarcasm!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Pup?
When he rescued the little girl and ran through the mines without knowing it.
What about Brian Hutchison’s performance did you like?
How you can tell when he changed characters and the various pitches in his voice.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It did make me laugh quite a few times!
Any additional comments?
I loved how I felt like I was literally in the story. There were times when I thought I was walking around the camp and at the battlegrounds. This book is very well put together and very detailed. Great job Chris!

Absolutely Fantastic!
You know that socially awkward new guy in every war story that does everything wrong, everyone makes fun and you can't help but cringe and yell "what are you doing?" every time they come into the story? Well here is his side of the story. Fair warning enjoyment of dark humor and sarcasm are required for this laugh out loud listen.

I resemble that remark
Pup is a hero for everyone out there slugging away. The author successfully uses Pup’s physical and social ineptitude (Yes I just used the word ineptitude) to create a slapstick character. He then taps Pup’s inner intellectual monologue to play the straight man. Thus creating a one man comedy duo. Bravo Mr Slater! Bravo.

Don’t pass this up!
A self-deprecating “hero” who will bring you smiles and laughter from Chapter 1 to the end. Just a delightful story, narrated perfectly. Again don’t pass this up.

I hope the true heroes don't hate me!
Prepare for a light, fun listen about a down on his luck, pessimistic soldier on his first tour in Korea. The inferiority complex causes him to make stupid mistakes, making him appear to others as a bumbling “cherry”. They called him Pup. His self-effacing demeanor and humor were honest and polite. The story chronicles this mild-mannered man coming to terms with the camaraderie, panic, and horror of war. It’s a wonderful story. At times you laugh, at others, you contemplate what Pup is going through, and sympathize. The addition of Mayumi is a bright light in the darkness and pain of war. The characters are amazing, all of them likable. The narration by Brian Hutchison is spot on. Highly recommend.
