    Avis de l'équipe

In Book 8 of Laurann Dohner's steamy, popular New Species series, Dr. Allison Baker passionately tends to 880, a wounded New Species: part animal, part man, and in a coma. Knowing that her tempting female scent will lure him into consciousness, she begins sleeping beside him - and after 880 wakes, choosing the powerful and dark name Obsidian, he decides to claim Alli as his. A sensual, versatile performance from Vanessa Chambers helps bring Dohner's characters to life in this sexy example of erotic sci-fi.

    Description

Book 8 in the New Species series.

Dr. Allison Baker is obsessed with saving the comatose New Species male. She has tried everything and there’s only one option left. Alli will break every rule and put her life in danger by tempting 880 to wake, using only her feminine scent and touch. She just has to kidnap him and crawl into bed with him to make it work.

880 wakes in a different world with a small female who’s been sleeping beside him, caressing him, and wrapping her sweet body around his, teasing his senses. He lies silent and still, listening and evaluating each arousing touch, fighting his body’s reaction. Hatred flares when he discovers she’s human, but Mercile stole everything from him so he decides it’s fair to take her in return.

But things quickly change and he wants her at his side and in his bed. 880 has chosen a new name – Obsidian - the personification of dark and dangerous. He’ll fight them all to keep Alli. No one will stand in his way.

    So hard... on the fence!

I really did like this book... Really!

My one and only issue is with Ali (Dr. Alison Baker). She was extremely wishy washy the entire book. It literally drove me crazy. Apparently she had a connection with Obsidian because she literally stole him from the NSO... but as soon as he wakes up and she gets to see him again, she gets all "I love you, but I can't be with you".

But what really takes to cake... is how she is supposed to be a doctor, and she has the hugest language barrier with him... She gets pissed b/c he is too blunt... Well he has been locked up in a cage for, IDK... his entire life... so yeah... social etiquette will go right out the window for Obsidian... how does she not get that... Seriously...

The story is pretty much the same format, NS finding their mate with a human... but Ali is just... eh! She reminds me of Trisha... just irritating...

Story is still worth a listen; especially you have invested in the other 7 books... Just be warned... Ali is going to be irritating.

Good Credit, Buy or Sale... Either one...you will be happy... but seriously... think about Ali before you use that credit. I prefer to use my credits on something more expensive and that will leave me feeling satisfied...

Narration was awesome... as usually for this series and narrator...

    3.5 Obsidian Stars

I will admit to being curious about Obsidian from the past books, though we don’t really understand who he is until this book.

Dr. Allison is new to, and she becomes a huge part of this series without us knowing.
Honesty is huge to New Species and breaking that trust is going to be catastrophic as Doc Ally finds out.

Obsidian is very much cave man to me, I liked it and I didn't. I think what parts I didn't like was that there wasn't more New Species around to do like a 101 for him.

I also don’t really agree with how Ally was treated not that she didn't deserve something but I don’t know I just wasn't a fan of that part of everything.

I do admit that the attraction and the confusion was interesting to hear play out.

Again I am a fan of this narrator she does a wonderful job with these characters making them distinct and not like they run together. You know who is talking. Loved that.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

    Overall ~ A Good Story!!

Obsidian's story was good but my least favorite so far.

I do love how some of the charters are developed over the series but each story is really about a different New Species and Obsidian has been recently freed so he had some issues.

What I did not like about this story was the fact they sent Ali away to bring Obsidian in line and learn how to fit in with society.

However, I will definitely be continuing this series.

    masculine voice needed

male voices/voice should be utilized also. new species are strong, sexy, masculine males. masculinity should be incorperated in the audio performances otherwise it looses alot of the appearl you get by reading it.

    Newly Freed & Unhinged

I'm a total sucker for this series, but, this one was not on the level of some of the others. That said, this one was still good for me, because I'm like a SuperFan for Species! All of the stories have more or less the same concept, and Dohner has come up with some interesting nuances for each story making each one unique. There are two main characteristics of these stories that really tickle my fancy---the sex scenes are super steamy and seem just a bit taboo because of that animalistic vibe the new species have going for them, not sure what that says about me, but, I digress---I also, really get a kick out of communication exchanges the humans and new species have between themselves as they learn about each other. It's probably Dohner's way of poking a little fun at some of society's silly obsessions and/or customs, but, I love the way she writes it---it's really one of the funniest characteristics of this series. Obsidian's story highlights the struggle of a newly freed species and how things go a little crazy as he's falling in love. I found myself laughing at various moments throughout this story and as usual, totally falling in love with the hot alpha male and his perfectly matched mate. I'm such a fan of these books and can't wait for more!

    OBSIDIAN-DARKNESS THAT HOLDS BEAUTY

Of all the New Species books, this would have to be my least favorite, so far. That is not to say that I didn’t enjoy listening to the book because I did. I just thought the heroine was annoying. Why is it that people that have a lot of book sense don’t really have any common sense. Let me explain.

Dr. Allison Baker (Allie) risks everything (her life, her career, her job) to save a new species that is currently in a coma. She kidnaps Obsidian aka 880 and takes him to a rental house to try to coerce him to awaken using her scent. Obsidian has been in a coma since injuring himself trying to save his mate, when she was killed in front of him by some technicians. He has never known freedom and doesn’t understand that he and his people are free, do you see Allie’s first mistake. Allie then agrees to stay in his room with him, even though he has been somewhat hostile towards her to help him "adjust to freedom", do you see her second mistake. In the end they both get their HEA, but some of Allie decisions just left me confused about this character.

On the other hand, I love Obsidian. He is the perfect prototype of a new species man. He is gorgeous, fierce, and protective and loves hard. He knows he shouldn’t want Allie because she is human but doggoneit, he is determined to have her even if it means learning to accept that not all humans are evil.

This book also lacked some of the action that was previous of the other books. But the storyline is still interesting and it’s also interesting when you learn about Obsidian full background. I think his background was bittersweet, even if he did have a mate. As always, the romance scenes are steamy, hot and drool worthy. It helps keep my work time interesting.

Overall, I think you should read the book, if not for anything just to learn about Obsidian and his life and to catch up on the rest of the New Species characters.

Pretty good addition to the series. :D

    3.5-4 stars

This was a pretty good story. I really liked Obsidian and Alli and was rooting for them to get past the people/issues trying to keep them apart. I really love this series and this was a good addition to it.

Allison (Alli) is a doctor at the NSO (New Species Organization) site called Homeland. She's a good woman and a good doctor and cares very much for the New Species. She has a NS male (known by the number 880) in her care that's in a coma and she has come to care about him more than she should since he's her patient. It's unhealthy for him to be in a coma for so long and the other NS are considering "pulling the plug" but they wont let her try to wake him through unusual methods. In desperation, she formulates a plan and manages to steal away with 880 in an attempt to save him.

Obsidian (who was known as 880 until he chose a name) is a NS male lost his mate when he was still being held captive in the labs of Mercile Industries. He harmed himself in an effort to get at the people that killed her and was close to death when the facility was found and raided and the NS people were saved. He was in a coma but started to slowly wake up, finding that there was a female there (Alli) that was caring for him. He didn't wake up all at once but slowly recovered use of his body. He's pulled the rest of the way out of it when he hears Alli screaming in pain.

Alli had stolen Obsidian but left a note for the NSO to let them know why. They found her and Obsidian and weren't gentle with her while capturing her, causing her to scream. Obsidian comes to her rescue but then is shocked to find she's human and thinks she's a technician from Mercile. When he meets other NS people he finds out he's free but has trouble believing it and believing even the other NS people he encounters. He gets some encouragement to see Alli and once he knows how much she did for him and how much she risked, he wants to talk to her. Once he sees her again he decides he wants to keep her. He's rather conflicted though since he still feels guilt over not being able to save his mate during his captivity (even though they didn't have an emotional bond like most mates, they just relied on each other). Alli knows that she shouldn't' agree to stay with Obsidian when he asks (more like demands) that she stay with him. She cares too much for him to say no though and though she's not sure what to make of him or what exactly he wants, she stays and they start to bond. This gets a little problematic because others keep causing problems for their relationship. Destiny (a NS male that wants Alli for himself) as well as others that aren't convinced that Obsidian is completely alright (mentally) after his captivity and coma. These thoughts aren't helped by his aggressiveness trying to keep any other males from Alli (but considering the loss of his previous mate, his over protectiveness is rather understandable). Fortunately they have a few friends that are on their side.

Obsidian and Alli don't have a smooth relationship because at first Alli isn't sure just how sound Obsidian's health and mental state is and isn't sure of his intentions towards her. She worries that he's trying to use her to replace his old mate or that he's only wanting her because she's familiar and all he knows. She starts to fall for him and is worried that he will regret being with her once he gets used to his new life. Obsidian has started to bond with Alli and although he doesn't really know enough to consider it love, he's firm enough in his feelings that he knows Alli is who he wants no matter what he learns or who he meets in the future. There's also the fact that Allie's future is unsure since she's still waiting to find out her punishment for stealing Obsidian, which might get her sent to prison or at least fired and removed from NSO property. Just when it seems like things are working out, Destiny decides to be a jerk and challenge Obsidian for Alli. They fight and Obsidian hurts Destiny badly. This gives the resident head-shrink the fits and he tries to insist that Obsidian be put down as dangerous. That doesn't happen but there's a lot of crap that goes on that ends up splitting Alli and Obsidian up. Fortunately, Obsidian and Alli are reunited and find that they missed each other terribly, they love each other and wont be parted again. Then they get to start their well deserved HEA.

This was a pretty enjoyable story. I really liked Obsidian and Alli and was happy to see them get together in the end. Breeze and Moon were both great friends to the couple in the story. I'm looking forward to Moon's book and I hope Breeze gets a book of her own. I also hope Jericho gets his own book. He seemed really sweet and unfairly treated by the NS women (because he has strange colored eyes mostly), he needs a nice human girl to make him feel loved! I'm really looking forward to more books in this series. I'd recommend this book.

Different take on the New-Species Stories

The author of this series has quite an imagination that keeps the readers/listeners continuing to come back. This story has a different take than the others. Dr. Allison Baker is obsessed with the new species that is in a coma. His name is 880. Ms. Dohner does it again with such an exciting story that you can't put it down until the last sentence of the book. Or in my case, stop listening to it even to go to bed. The narrator does a great job with this book as usual. This story has all the elements that make it a well rounded book.

    Okay that was pretty good!

Finally, a book that was totally original, which is saying something since it is book 8 in a series.

Dr. Ally loves New Species and would do anything to protect them, but when one of her patients isn't recovering she takes matter into her own hands to heal him.

I was a bit bummed about the separation, but overall I think it was handled well and the characters got me emotionally invested in this world yet again!
