    5+ Numbers Stars

I don’t recall ever wanting to give more than 5 stars but this book I do. First I am a little sad that there are not any more books!
But it helped that this book was really 2 books in 1.

The first half is about Dana and Mourn both still pretty deep in their grief. Both lost their ‘mates’ and are having a hard time getting back into the swing of things.

This broke my heart over and over again. But Laurann Dohner has a way of getting us to root for these 2 injured souls.

Dana has had more time and experience with her grief so she befriended Mourn. Gosh I was torn apart by the sorrow and loss these 2 had. But I was so utterly happy when they turned to each other; they both deserve to be with someone who understands the hole they each have.

The second half of the book was about a human girl being raised in the testing facilities with a species.
How she survived the abuse and drugs inflicted on her. It was a powerful story of lose and how she fought with all that she was to get back to her pup. I loved this story the best.

Hero was so conflicted and he too was so hurt by his past. But it was his here and now that he had to deal with the guilt and the feeling of needing/wanting to flee. I loved how he fought himself to be what and who she needed.

This was a true love story of surviving at any cost and then learning to live. Love it.

I loveeeeeeeed Vanessa’s narration.. Yep I said it before on every review and I will stay it again. She brought these books to life with her voice and her words.
I would probably listen to anything she narrates from here on out she has me hook line and sinker.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

    2 good stories!

I liked the stories, especially the second story! It was so nice to hear about the people from other stories. Love this series!

    WHY ALL THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS?

    Any additional comments?

Why are there so many negative reviews? As with any lengthy series, there comes a time when the stories' plots become somewhat similar. It's kind of a necessary evil. I've only read one series that this is not the norm and this is because the author used the same 2 main characters in them all. I think you either have to accept that once established, all books within a series will be somewhat similar OR you have to be willing to let that author know she should move on to another series. I, for one, am not done loving Dohner's New Species series and personally found the two stories within Numbers engaging and refreshing. The two female characters come from different backgrounds and meet two different males who struggle with separate issues. Perhaps the two stories should have been separated and lengthened, but I think she made a good call since neither of these two males are ones she has mentioned before. I think the real issue is that we all want her to go back and focus of the males she's touched on in previous books. We feel like we've been left hanging there and perhaps, for some of us, our bitter is showing a bit...no?

    Good job, Laurann. Great book!

    Great choice! 2-fer

In this edition called "Numbers" we get two stories.

Mrs. Dohner took the honorable way out of a problem. She had two stories in her head, but neither was the 9+ hours we are use to with New Species books. She could have filled in a fake kidnapping or some weird drama that would take 2 hours to unravel and 20 seconds to clear up, but instead she just stopped writing when the stories were done.

Both books are related to the New Species that were recovered when Valiant rescued Tammy, both are about 6 hours long.

#1: Mourn was rescued with his Mate, but after they got to Homeland she got worse and eventually died. He chose the name Mourn because that is what he was, mourning his Mate. He set about in being self destructive to try and get past his pain and wound up in medical at least once a week. While there, after he tried to take on Darkness (the stupid male!) he met a woman who wasn't like the others. She had lost her human husband and she seemed to understand his pain....could they bring each other comfort?

#2: Hero had kept Tammy safe until Valiant could rescue her. He had said he did it because he would hope someone else would have done that for his mate, if he had one. The truth is he did have a mate, a human mate, she was put in his cell when he was 5 years old and they grew up together. The last time he saw her he had been livid...they had taken her to be with another male, she had chosen to lay with another male, his fury had no bounds. He didn't mean to hurt her, the chain popped off the wall and hit her, Mercile told him he had killed her, his mistake was believing them. When a human female showed up at the gates of Homeland saying she was raised with a Canine Male at Mercile he raced to medical, hoping against hope, could it be her? When they saw each other time stopped....for her he was a miracle to be alive, for him, she was a ghost who came back from the dead to haunt him and break him.

Very good two stories, can't wait for more! I really love this world and all it's unique problems.

Two Halves Don't Make a Whole

Would you try another book from Laurann Dohner and/or Vanessa Chambers?

Probably, the previous New Species novels were humorous and and had lovable characters that made me want to know more about them. The plots of the books are rather cookie cutter, but the books have great characters.

Would you ever listen to anything by Laurann Dohner again?

Yes, for the reasons listed above.

What about Vanessa Chambers’s performance did you like?

She's pretty good at differentiating the characters' voices and personalities.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Numbers?

If I could play editor, I would not have cut out any scenes; I would have developed this "mish -mash" of two stories into two complete, fully developed stories - two different novels.

    Any additional comments?

It appears as though Dohner ran out of ideas and just smashed two works-in-progress into one book. I want my money back. This is the first New Species novel that's disappointed me.

    Numbers did not disappoint!!

What did you love best about Numbers?

How heart warming the two stories were. Plus I liked140 and 927 from earlier books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I think I kind of liked 140/Mourn. I loved from from Wrath/Lauren's story. Although 927/Mourn keeping Tammy safe for Valiant was great too.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The scene in the medical center when Mourn was brought in all battered and out of it. Dana held his hand and spoke to him when no one else was arounnd.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried more during Hero's story. It was sad and heartbreaking. Happy ending but I cried buckets.

    Any additional comments?

I listen (my audio books) the new species books over and over. Valiant&Tammy. Shadow&Beauty.
And I just can't get enough Smiley. I love them all.
    Write faster please.

    disappointment

As of all Lauran Dohner fans, I have waited, so long, for any new book to come out. I love every single series she has written; New Species being my favorite. These two novellas were written like the dorkiest Harlingen Romances. There was absolutely no depth, to these stories. There was no action, like in the previous stories. They met, had hot sex and got mated; that was it.
I know the author has had health problems and I sincerely hope the stroke hasn't caused her lasting problems; the books being the least important thing. Maybe she hasn't felt well and felt compelled to release anything. No matter what the issue is, the fact is that this book would have been better if it were scapped instead of mudding an excellent author's reputation. I hope Lauran gets back to her old self soon. Not because of the many loved series she has written, just because she is fellow Wife and Mother.

    NUMBERS?!?

Admittedly, I'm a diehard fan of Laurann Dohner's books, so Dohner can really do no wrong in my opinion. NUMBERS was different--just in terms of format--I kept waiting for someone to refer to the New Species character called 'Numbers' but it never happened! LOL! It was basically a double feature. The first story was about Mourn and the second was about Hero. I enjoyed both--super sexy, funny, kind of poignant in moments, but, it was different to have the two stories together. All in all, I can't wait for the next book, I don't think I could ever tire of the New Species series, it's an automatic purchase for me every time!

    Great Series

A little sad that this was the last book of the New Species series. Read them all and enjoyed every single one.

    End of the story

I loved the story line in the beginning but now I am done with this story. This is the last book in this series I will buy. Thank you for keeping me entertained for this long.
